The U.S. Treasury says the last round of Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA2) ended on September 30, 2025. Programs can no longer use that money to help renters. We found no federal ERA, ERAP, CARES Act or stimulus rent application open today.
Where to go now: find your state below or call 211. Rent help now comes from state, local and nonprofit programs, and many have limited money.
Last checked: November 4, 2026. Benefits Explorer is a private directory, not a government agency. We do not take applications, provide rent money or decide who gets help. Report a mistake.
What Ended, and When
People often mix up these names. Here is what Treasury says about the federal ones, and what we found about the others.
| Name you may have seen | What it was | Status |
|---|---|---|
| ERA2 (ERAP) | Second round of Emergency Rental Assistance, from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. | Closed. Ended September 30, 2025. Treasury's closeout guide says this money cannot pay October 2025 rent "under any circumstances." |
| ERA1 (ERAP) | First round of Emergency Rental Assistance, from the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021. | Closed. Treasury says it ended September 30, 2022, or December 29, 2022 for programs that got extra funds. |
| CARES Act | The law behind the Coronavirus Relief Fund, which paid state, local and tribal governments. Treasury lists ERA under the two later laws above, not the CARES Act. | Closed. Treasury says the fund's covered period ended December 31, 2022. |
| "Stimulus" rent money | Not a program name we could find on Treasury's rental assistance pages. People often mean ERA. | No application to file that we could find. |
| "Rent relief" | Not one program. It is a name some states used, such as Texas Rent Relief and Arkansas Rent Relief. | Those two have closed: Texas and Arkansas. Check your state below. |
Applied years ago and never heard back? Ask the program that took your application. We cannot see its records.
How to Apply for ERAP or CARES Act Rent Help Now
You can't apply for the federal money, because it has ended. Be wary of any site offering a federal ERAP, CARES Act or stimulus rent application today. See the warning signs. To ask for rent help that may still exist:
- Find your state in the table below and look under "Where to try now."
- Call 211 and ask who has rent money in your county.
- Ask a HUD-approved housing counselor at 800-569-4287. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says some of these agencies offer low- or no-cost rental counseling, and not all do.
Treasury now sends renters to the CFPB's housing portal for other rental resources. If you have to move, see security deposit help.
Some Programs Still Use the Name
A program can be called "emergency rental assistance" without being the federal one. These two are examples we checked on November 4, 2026. Neither page names its funding source.
- Washington, D.C.: the DC ERAP page says scheduling for appointments will open December 3, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. It may pause again once appointments run out.
- St. Paul, Minnesota: the city's Emergency Rent Assistance Program opens for the first two days of each month, then picks applicants by lottery. Being picked does not guarantee money.
Closed Programs by State, and Where to Try Now
Our state pages list 48 programs in 30 states as closed or no longer taking applications. Next to each is a place to try. These do not replace the old federal money, and money may be limited. "Open" means the line or program was running when checked. It does not mean you will get money.

Scams Using These Program Names
Closed programs are easy for scammers to copy, because people still search for them. Be careful with any ad, text, call or site offering a CARES Act, ERAP or "stimulus" rent application. Two state agencies have warned about this:
- Mississippi: Mississippi Home Corporation says its RAMP program is closed, and that Facebook ads or pages claiming to be RAMP are a scam.
- Georgia: the Department of Community Affairs warned in April 2026 about people posing as its staff. It says it charges no fee to apply and does not accept CashApp, Apple Pay or Venmo.
The FTC says scammers may pose as rental assistance providers and demand money up front or personal information. Don't share your bank details or Social Security number with someone who contacted you first. Check the program through 211 or your state's page, and report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For more warning signs, see how to spot a rental assistance scam.
