Rent Assistance in Arizona

Last checked: November 2026. Benefits Explorer is a directory. We do not provide rent money or decide who gets help, and each program makes its own decisions.

In Arizona, the door you knock on depends on your city. Phoenix, Mesa and Glendale run their own rent help, and Maricopa County's program covers residents outside those three cities through Community Action Program offices. Outside Maricopa County, regional agencies and councils of governments handle requests.

Expect limited money. The Arizona Bar Foundation's guide says most emergency rental assistance programs have stopped taking new applications, and a House legislative summary says the state's pandemic-era program stopped on August 31, 2024. Phoenix reports limited funding and tells people to try again the next week if appointments are full.

Facing Eviction in Arizona?

Arizona law (A.R.S. 33-1368) lets a landlord end a rental agreement if a tenant fails to pay rent within five days after written notice of nonpayment. If the rent is still unpaid after that window, the landlord may file a special detainer action in court. Other kinds of notice have different time periods, so read yours closely or use the forms and guidance on AZCourtHelp. Read the official guidance

Arizona Rent Assistance Questions

Does Arizona have a statewide rent program right now?

The state's pandemic-era program stopped accepting applications on August 31, 2024, according to a House summary. A 2026 bill, HB 2682, proposed a new Department of Economic Security program with $5 million, but the summary we read does not show it became law. We could not open the department's own pages, so ask 211 Arizona at 877-211-8661 what the state is funding now.

Is the Arizona Rental Assistance hotline still taking applications?

We could not confirm that it is. A City of Tucson page, with no date, still lists the hotline at (833) 912-0878, but the House summary says the state's program stopped accepting applications on August 31, 2024, and we could not open the department's pages. In Pima County, try the Community Action Agency at 520-724-2667 instead.

Who helps with rent in Phoenix?

City of Phoenix Human Services offers help through its three family services centers, by appointment at 602-534-2433. Funding is limited and you need to be in a crisis situation. Residents elsewhere in the county usually apply through their Community Action Program office.

Who helps with back rent in Maricopa County outside Phoenix?

Maricopa County Human Services can help households past due on rent after a documented crisis, through local Community Action Program offices. You must live in the office's service area. Mesa and Glendale residents use their city's own offices instead.
