Last checked: November 2026. Benefits Explorer is a directory. We do not provide rent money or decide who gets help, and each program makes its own decisions.
The Kansas Emergency Rental Assistance program (KERA) closed in early 2023, and the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) does not take rent applications from households directly. Its ongoing route is Tenant Based Rental Assistance, which you apply for through whichever agency KHRC funds in your county.
Local options depend heavily on where you live. KHRC's resource list, updated September 30, 2026, assigns each county to a Community Action agency and adds separate contacts for Douglas, Sedgwick, Shawnee and Wyandotte counties. Johnson County's own back-rent program is out of money.
Where to Start in Kansas
Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA)
A federally funded HOME program for income-eligible households that can help with rent, security deposits and utility deposits. Use the county selector on KHRC's page to find your local agency, which sets out eligibility and takes the application. Income limits vary by county. The page does not say whether funds are available right now in any given county.

Facing Eviction in Kansas?
Kansas Legal Services says a landlord can start an eviction for unpaid rent, or for staying after a lease ends, with a 3-day notice. Other lease violations carry a 14-day period to fix the problem. The court date on your summons falls within 14 days of receiving the petition, and missing it means the landlord automatically wins. A trial, if one is set at that first hearing, is usually no more than 8 days later. Read the official guidance
