National Baptist Memorial Church - The Well Food Pantry

Every second and fourth Saturday of the month, National Baptist Memorial Church opens its doors at 9:00 am. to a steady flow of people coming to receive food from our food pantry. Monday through Friday at 5:15 p.m., an average of 20 children from the church’s after school program gathers around a table to eat dinner. The names of these ministries, "The Well Food Pantry" and "The Well After School Program", are derived from John 4 when Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at a well. During this encounter, Jesus accepts the woman just as she is; social barriers and taboos were broken; and, the Samaritan women received the revelation knowledge that Jesus is the Messiah. National strives to create such an encounter with the children and parents of the after school program and every recipient that comes to the food pantry each time they enter our space. The Well Food Pantry opened its doors August 23, 2008. During our first year, we were able to provide food for about 2,000 people.

The United Church - The Foggy Bottom Food Pantry

The food pantry is a mission of The United Church established in 1981 as a community service. Money and food from the church, individual members, FEMA, International Monetary Fund, student groups of the George Washington University, and others provide the basic support. Funds are used to purchase food and supplies, principally salvage food from the Capital Area Community Food Bank. There are no overhead charges because the program is run by volunteers utilizing the church's facilities. Food is bagged and distributed twice per month to individuals and families that can demonstrate need. Special bags containing ready-to-eat foods are prepared for those who are homeless. The Pantry is currently distributing about 900 bags of food each month (approximately 15,000 pounds) at a cost of about $3,000 per month. Volunteers are needed on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month. Pack bags beginning at 9:00 a.m. - distribution is from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

First Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church Helping Hands Ministry

The “Helping Hands” Food Distribution Ministry was born out of the vision for a Church Alive. Sister Jean Whitley met with Pastor Bell to discuss plans for re-establishing a food distribution program at First Rising Mt. Zion. Volunteers were recruited and they attended formal orientation at the Capital Area Food Bank. The Food Distribution Ministry officially began meeting in October 2003. Pastor Bell was named Executive Director, Sister Jean Whitley, Director of Agency Relations and Sister Barbara Jordan, Program Director. On October 21, 2003, the ministry officially adopted the name “Helping Hands” at the suggestion of Deaconess Virginia Logan. The ministry began making emergency food distributions to those in need. For Thanksgiving, the ministry was able to provide over one hundred families with a turkey and the makings for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Today, “Helping Hands” continues to distribute food to needy families. In partnership with the council of churches of Greater Washington, there are presently 163 families registered to receive food every other week. These families cross the spectrum of need and include individuals from the Community of Hope, a program for families transitioning from temporary to permanent housing and permanent employment; the Strong Families Program, a family self-sufficiency program; New Endeavors for Women; and the House of Ruth. With the help of the Lord Almighty, “Helping Hands” will realize its goal of regular distribution to 200 families by the end of 2005.

Common Good City Farm (CGCF)

Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is a relationship between customers and producers in which everyone shares the risks and rewards of farming. CSA customers are shareholders who commit in advance for a portion, or share, of foods that will be harvested throughout the season. It's a beautiful thing!

Through our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Program, we distribute weekly bags of produce to participating members throughout the growing season. Typically, members must sign up before the season begins. We offer both full-price and income-qualifying CSA shares.

Neighborhood Farm Initiative

Neighborhood Farm Initiative (NFI) believes growing healthy food is a birthright for everyone! At NFI we promote sustainable food gardening methods that are:
LOW COST – work with simple materials and what you may already have on hand, and grow food inexpensively
LOW MAINTENANCE – we show how to help plants, soil, and insects work together to do some of the work for you!
LOW INPUT – skillful organic gardening lessens the need for fertilizers and pesticides
LOW IMPACT – natural growing methods nourish the cycle of life rather than deplete it

We have Gardens all over the Washington DC area and NFI's Fort Totten garden is at the very heart of our work. It's where people come together to teach, learn, work, play, laugh, share...and to grow fresh, healthy, delicious food for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Our garden is accessible via public transportation, conveniently located a short walk from the Fort Totten metro rail station (Green, Yellow, and Red lines). For information on Metro routes, schedules, and fares, visit wmata.com.

WALKING DIRECTIONS FROM THE FORT TOTTEN STATION:
After exiting the station, turn left (north) and walk up the sidewalk past where the buses stop. Across from the parking lot you’ll see a paved footpath going up over a slight, grassy hill. Follow that path across until you see our garden fence come into view at the top of the hill! Closest address for driving and/or online mapping:100 Gallatin St NE

Damien Ministries

Damien Ministries was founded in 1987 by Louis Tesconi to serve the poorest of the poor living with HIV and AIDS, as inspired by the life of the Blessed Father Damien. The organization has grown from a small, volunteer-run endeavor to one of the most respected and well-known organizations in the District of Columbia. While our size and scope of programs have grown, the vision of Damien Ministries has stayed the same-a strong and passionate desire to reach out to the people who are living and dying with HIV and AIDS.

Damien Ministries' programs are designed to build upon each other and the services offered by other providers in order to increase life expectancy and quality of life for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

Our Food Bank program is often the client's first introduction to our organization, whether it's through a referral from another agency or word of mouth spread from peers who have accessed our services in the past. Clients come in once a month to receive enough groceries to last up to 10 days (2 meals a day). This helps alleviate some of the financial burden clients struggle under trying to afford basic necessities like rent and food for their families on top of their medical bills and other expenses.

Food For All DC

Food for All DC started as a small operation aimed at providing home grocery delivery for those not mobile enough to make it to other local organizations for assistance. Food for All has maintained its grassroots mentality and is still completely volunteer run, but has been able to grow in capacity.

Presently, Food for All serves all quadrants in Washington, D.C. and makes deliveries every week, including holidays.

Food for All is a non-profit organization that strives to provide emergency food to those who are in temporary situations of need. Our clients are generally elderly citizens, handicapped, or single mothers with young children. Each week we accept referrals from social workers who have been contacted by individuals, and in some cases, we receive calls directly from individuals in need.

Bread for the City

Each month, Bread for the City’s two food pantries provide nutritious groceries to households that experience food insecurity-including fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats- to clients living near the federal poverty line. Two monthly Farmers Markets offer fresh produce to the community at large, and as a Grocery Plus distribution site, Bread for the City offers an additional 30 lb box of food to a small number of seniors. Our Sustainable Agriculture division both grows food and educates the community at our two rooftop gardens and three-acre orchard.

To receive a monthly food supplement from Bread for the City’s pantry, clients must be low income and live in Washington, DC. A one-time registration and an annual re-certification. No one will be turned away from receiving services at Bread for the City because they do not have a photo ID. Capital Area Food Bank

Food bank programs for seniors provide food to those in need at or near their home.

Next to children, seniors are the most vulnerable group at risk of hunger. Senior food insecurity has risen as a result of the recession. The number of seniors at risk of hunger in 2011 was 50% higher than in 2007.

The Senior Brown Bag program provides income-qualified seniors with supplemental bags of food and nutrition education materials on a monthly basis. The food bank currently operates 75 Senior Brown Bag locations serving over 4,178 seniors.

ACOC Food Pantry Program

For the past 20 years, the ACOC Food Pantry Program has provided free bagged groceries to hungry families, seniors, and single adults. On average, the program hands out approximately 600 bags of groceries per month. For what most people spend on eating out any given day ($12), we are able to provide groceries for an entire family for a week. Our Food Pantry Program is supported by all-volunteer staff and food donation come to us through the generosity of individuals and our corporate partners. During the holiday season, we hand out hundreds of turkeys and healthy side dishes for Thanksgiving, and food baskets and toys at Christmas, all going to needy families in our community. We take pride in being able to provide this most basic service to those in need, and realize that our Food Pantry provides much needed sustenance to individuals and families that sometimes have no other option. Andromeda Transcultural Health - Monthly Food Market

The Food Distribution is held the second Thursday of every month at Andromeda Transcultural Health. The food that is delivered varies from lettuce, cabbage, watermelon, sweet potatoes, potatoes, milk, cheese, bread, salads and pastries. People can begin lining up outside starting at 9 am or earlier and they must bring bags to carry the food once they receive it. Once everyone is in line, every person is given a number and asked for basic information such as their name, address, phone number and how many persons are in their family. The food can arrive as early as 8am and as late as 11am. Once the food has arrived it is set up and groups of five are let in to receive food. Once everyone in line has gone inside and received food there is a second round for people that want more food for their families. There are a few regulations that everyone must follow which are you must have a number to enter, you cannot cut in line and you must respect all staff members

Damien Ministries Food Bank

The Damien Ministries Food Bank is an important service for people living with HIV and AIDS. Given the rising costs of medical care and prescription drugs, clients have limited funds available to purchase food and toiletries. Our Food Bank steps in to help so that clients don't have to choose between medicine or food. With a list of nearly 1300 clients, we provide two to four bags of groceries per month to clients in need, with enough food supplements to last up to 14 days. As treatment for HIV/AIDS has expanded and evolved, so has the mission of the food bank since 1987. The mission of the food bank is not just to help extend the life expectancy of our clients, but to improve their quality of life. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: In order to qualify for food bank services, clients must be HIV-positive and be able to show financial need. Clients are required to provide a letter of referral, usually from a case manager, explaining the financial need, as well as proof of HIV status from either a case manager or medical professional. It is recommended that case managers call in advance and speak with the Food Bank Manager to confirm food bank hours and availability.

Loaves and Fishes

Loaves and Fishes began as an outgrowth of St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church’s practice in the mid-1960s of providing meals after Sunday services. When hungry nonchurchgoers began to appear in considerable numbers, the congregation launched a meals ministry and named the program Loaves and Fishes after the miracle described in the gospels. As Loaves and Fishes grew, other churches stepped in to help. We are now sustained by a partnership with 11 other churches, many of them in the suburbs, and diverse foundations, community groups, and individuals. Our mission and goals are two-fold: to feed the hungry in our community and to educate volunteers and community members about hunger and homelessness. We are proud to serve a warm, healthy lunch to all who come to us without regard to their age, race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, religious affiliation, or lack of it. We invite you to join us, as a guest, volunteer, or financial supporter. Meals are available around noon on weekends and federal holidays at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Washington, District Of Columbia

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
