The Healthy Living Pantry (HLP) is a resource to families in Asheville and surrounding communities who need temporary food assistance. Hickory Soup Kitchen
In March of 1983 lay leaders of six “downtown†churches, led by Mrs. Mary Lou Dixon of First Presbyterian, began serving the hungry on a rotating basis. By 1985, the kitchen was serving 25-90 people five days a week and the old Highland Fire Station became its first permanent home. During 1990, the kitchen outgrew its space and needed more space. The City of Hickory offered the old Post Office Annex for a new facility. This is the present location. A building campaign raised $220,000 for renovations, including a walk-in freezer/refrigerator, shower facilities, and a modern kitchen with up-to-date institutional appliances. The Hickory Soup Kitchen operated under the loving guidance of Frankie Mosteller until her retirement in June 2008.The Soup Kitchen Board is very grateful for Frankie and Bob's dedication. Sam Whitener served as kitchen manager until January of 2010, when he took a leave of absence due to personal reasons. Austin Pearce now serves as Executive Director. In 2012, the Hickory Soup Kitchen served 46,336 people 70,818 plates of food. We were open 259 days. The Hickory Soup Kitchen serves well-balanced, nutritional, hot meals from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm on week days. The building is open from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. The dining area can seat 132. An average of over 273 meals is served each day and almost over 70,818 meals are served each year. The soup kitchen follows the closure schedule of the Hickory City Public Schools in inclement weather.

Have you ever found yourself so busy that you missed a meal? Perhaps you just didn’t take the time to grab a quick bite to eat? Now imagine you were hungry, but didn’t have any food at all. You weren’t missing a meal out of forgetfulness, but because you could not afford one. There is a group of people that we rarely notice, but are around us every single day. Men, women, and children who are hungry and wondering where they will find their next meal. Now imagine that you could meet that need for those who are less fortunate. Imagine sharing a hot bowl of soup or a sandwich with someone in need. Imagine what that would do for them and you. This is the mission of the 957 Mobile Cafe. Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.
Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?
Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

- Number of people in their family.
You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.
How do drive-thru pantries actually work?
There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, here�s how most work:
Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.
Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.
Checkin.
You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.
Food is loaded into the cars.
Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.
