Church of ACTS Food Pantry

The Food Pantry exists to serve the local community with basic food supplies. VISION: To feed the hungry people in our local community who come from diverse backgrounds and who are experiencing lack due to being unemployed or earning a low income, being laid-off or living off of a fixed income such as social security or disability. MISSION: To fill the belly and the soul by passing out pre-packaged food donations received through in-house donations as well as from local food banks. To pray with individuals, UPON REQUEST ONLY, for their needs using the Word of God. PURPOSE: Our goal is to feed the hungry by providing food for people who, after paying their rent, utilities and medical bills, don't have enough money to buy food. Luke 1:53 says, "He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent away."

Roberts Park United Methodist Church Soup's On

Soup's On ministry at Roberts Park is in its second decade of service to our community. Since 1999, Soup's On has prepared and served nearly 150,000 meals to our neighbors in need. Each Sunday a hot meal is prepared in our large commercial kitchen, and served to 250 guests after our 10:30 a.m. worship service. Churches and organizations from across the Indianapolis metropolitan area participate in this ministry, and each week a different team supervises and shares in the preparation and serving of the meal. This effort takes a crew of 20 volunteers each week, and nearly 1000 each year. This army of volunteers through the years has been led by a faithful core of Soup's On Leadship Team members, some of whom have been with the program from the beginning.

Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center - Food Services

Access to healthy, nutritious food is vitally important to children and adults alike. Unfortunately, families and residents in low-income communities sometimes struggle to meet this most basic of needs. In some cases, even when food is available, it often lacks the nutrients that are needed to stay healthy. This can have a particularly negative affect on children who depend on nutritionally balanced meals to grow and develop. Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center makes sure that everyone in its neighborhood has access to the meals they need to survive and thrive. And we also provide a clean, hospitable environment to eat them in. From our emergency food pantry to evening dinner program, we work to ensure that life's most essential resource - food - is available to every single person in our community. Emergency Food Pantry: Open to residents of West Indianapolis. Evening dinner for Kids & William Penn Seniors: Offered every evening, Monday through Thursday. In partnership with Second Helpings, we provide a nutritious meal to all kids enrolled in our after-school or Summer Day Camp programs. Parents are welcome (and encouraged!) to eat with their kids, too. The meals are also served to senior citizens who live in William Penn Commons, an apartment building located adjacent to Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center.

SS Peter and Paul Cathedral Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry

The Cathedral Soup Kitchen has been a continuing program since the Great Depression of the late 1920s through the 1930s. It initially began with peanut butter sandwiches being handed out to the many persons in need. This evolved into early morning coffee and doughnuts. In the ‘70’s a Sunday meal was provided. During the 1980s space was given in the old Cathedral Elementary School to combine both efforts. In the early 1990s the daily Breakfast Program added a morning meal and a brunch meal as well as the beginning of a food pantry. The Cathedral Parish, the Sisters of Providence, St. Vincent de Paul and parishes such as St. Thomas, St. Pius, St. Luke, St. Susanna, St. Monica to name a few were involved in the many phases of growth by providing volunteers, food, and whenever possible, financial assistance. Today we have expanded our program to seven days per week. We are feeding 3,200 meals to the needy, homeless and poor people a month (or 41,600 meals a year). We provide food via the pantry to 1,080 households per month each Tuesday and Thursday (or 12,960 households each year). Mission of the Soup Kitchen: To reach out to the homeless, the needy, the poor, the marginalized people in our neighborhoods by offering food, respect, encouragement, prayers and goodwill. To be a bridge for those more fortunate so they may better understand the needs of our guests and provide time, help and assistance to the program either directly or indirectly. To provide a welcoming site for students to serve the poor and instill in them a life long commitment to helping the poor. To pray together and learn from each other so we may become a special and welcoming neighborhood of God. To provide a safe and welcoming environment that is conducive to serving meals to the poor, needy, homeless and disenfranchised. Kitchen Hours of Operation Monday - Friday Breakfast/Lunch 8:45 AM - 10:00 AM; Monday Dinner 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM; Saturday Lunch 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM; Sunday Coffee/Dinner 10:30AM - 1:00 PM; Food Pantry Hours of Operation: Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 AM - 10:45

Dalton's Food Pantry

More than eight years ago, God put it on my heart to help people in need. After much prayer I started Dalton's Food Pantry in the Haughville area. I grew up in this community and I know what it's like to walk these broken streets; broken people, broken homes, broken hopes and dreams. My name is J.R. Dalton. In January 2006, I made the commitment to God and obeyed his leading to give 10% of my income to help feed, clothe and house the needy. Other than giving my heart to Christ, this has been the most rewarding decision of my life. My ministries are not about us, we are Christ centered, obedient to His direction and we are interested in serving and blessing others. Jesus instructs us to love one another. That's who we are, the hands and feet of Jesus. Dalton's Food Pantry compassionately touches lives in being the hands and feet of Jesus, by providing essential necessities and pursing souls in planting seeds of love, hope and encouragement for the assured growth which is promised in God through whom all things are possible. Simply - LIVES TOUCHED, SOULS PURSUED, SEEDS PLANTED, GROWTH ASSURED.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Marion, Indiana

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
