Church of the Village

Hope for our Neighbors in Need is the food ministry of the Church of the Village. We help our neighbors in the short-term by providing them with hunger relief. We help them in the long-term by providing them with information on available social services to help them break the cycle of poverty. We also offer life-affirming hospitality to our visitors – some friendly encouragement to people who are coping with difficult daily struggles.

Our food ministry has two programs. On Tuesdays, we run Daisy’s Food Pantry – open from 1 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There, we distribute bags of groceries to individuals and families in need. On Saturdays, we host a community meal from 12 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and serve hot food to whoever comes through our doors. We invite members of the church to eat with our neighbors from the community. Hope for our Neighbors in Need is one of the most important missions for our church members who see this program as a key to sharing the love of Christ by supporting social justice and community outreach.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Church

Our Lady of Good Counsel Church is a cultural apostolate of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. It is a direct response to a call that began with Pope John Paul II. The first part of the evening is Eucharistic adoration and begins with Vespers (Evening Prayer). This is the universal prayer of the Church prayed by the Catholics throughout the world in every time zone and in every language. This provides a window for each person to personally encounter Jesus Christ. The beauty of the darkened Church illumined by candles helps us enter the mystery of our Lord's presence in the Eucharist.

Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty

Met Council's kosher food program meets the needs of all who are hungry whether they are large families struggling to feed their children, new immigrants with little income, or frail elderly people without nutritious food.

These programs enable clients to eat more healthfully — and ensure they can use their limited income to meet other daily needs, such as rent, clothing and medication.

We understand the unique challenges of affording kosher food and the importance of food for rituals. That is why all of the food throughout our system is kosher. That said, our services are available to anyone who is hungry—regardless as to whether or not they keep kosher.

We assist families with benefits applications, refer them to either LSA and non-LSA programs, offer immigration advice and help tenants avoid eviction and get needed repairs. Visitors to our client-choice food pantry receive fresh and healthy food choices after meeting with an advocate who evaluates the full extent of their needs.

LSA is proud to be a part of Action NYC, a citywide initiative through the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs to connect immigrant New Yorkers with free and confidential immigration legal consultations in all five boroughs. LSA partners with Action NYC to do outreach in Northern Manhattan, including East Harlem and Washington Heights.

Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries seeks to encourage the social, educational, spiritual, and economic growth of the “Hell’s Kitchen” community. We offer non-sectarian, multifaceted educational opportunities and direct services to community residents through partnerships between Metro Baptist Church, area residents, mission organizations, and community service providers.

We extend a call to others to enter into partnership with us. Our mission is to offer hope and renewal to those who have been trapped by an uncaring system and to fight personal and systematic injustices which sow despair. As we build a network of providers and caregivers, we make our services available to the people of the Clinton South neighborhood.

Food Pantry Program provides emergency food assistance through RMM’s Client-Choice Food Pantry. Each person receives a 3-day supply of nutritious food staples; families may receive assistance once per month. Food Pantry doors open Saturday mornings 11:00- 11:30 a.m. (except fifth Saturdays in a month), and clients must be in the building by 11:30 a.m.

West Side Campaign Against Hunger

Through a supermarket-style food pantry, West Side Campaign Against Hunger's mission alleviates hunger and creates a culture that promotes self-reliance and works for change.

West Side Campaign Against Hunger changes our perception of hungry people by working in partnership with them, providing food with dignity, and empowering customers to find solutions.

West Side Campaign Against Hunger welcomes low-income residents from all 5 boroughs of New York City, regardless of household size or immigration status. Learn more about what you will need to bring, to get started.

Customers are given a food card based on the number of family members. The card specifies the amount of cereals, fruits, vegetables, protein and dairy, but gives our customers the choice to pick the kind they prefer. The shopping card is based on the USDA’s MyPlate, ensuring our customers received balanced, nutritious meals.

Customers can come once a month and get nutritious food for the family for three days. We understand that everyone has different tastes and needs, so we offer a healthy variety of food. There are always fresh fruit and vegetable choices.

New Covenant Community Development Corporation (NCCDC) is committed to the holistic revitalization of the Bronx. We provide economic development and empowerment opportunities to help Bronx residents rebuild and sustain their community.

NCCDC strives to be a significant catalyst in bringing community development efforts to the Bronx. A primary issue for NCCDC has been the reclamation of the neighborhoods it serves through the rehabilitation or construction of housing units.

We expand to meet the evolving needs of its communities through the provision of Food Pantry Services and establishment of multi-faceted programs that benefit such groups as unemployed youth and adults, families in poverty and homeless people, among others.

Our Mission Statement

To reduce unemployment, poverty, illiteracy and homelessness in our neighborhoods by assisting those classified as low income earners, high risk and vulnerable through non-traditional community based education and social support services.

Food Pantry

The NCCDC Food Pantry Services work to eliminate hunger and its root causes … because no one should be hungry.

NCCDC is determined to help fight childhood hunger. Childhood hunger is a huge problem in the Bronx. The Bronx is among New York counties with a high rate of child food insecurity. NCCDC’s Food Pantry Services is geared toward supporting the goal of developing additional capacities for food pantries. These additional capacities will have the potential to reach an additional 1,250 families per month and distribute groceries for hundreds of thousands meals per year.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in New York, New York

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.
