Food Pantry at Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green

We are pleased to announce that the Food Pantry at the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green will now be open the fourth Saturday of every month from 10 am to 12 noon. Thanks go to our additional volunteers who make these new hours possible. The Food Pantry has been providing food on an emergency basis to families in Bloomfield and surrounding communities in Essex County. We currently serve an average of 50-60 families per month, which ranges between 75 and 165 individuals. A referral is required - please see below for our operating procedures. The Food Pantry is located on the church premises at 147 Broad Street, Bloomfield, and is open 9:30 am to 11:00 am every Wednesday and Friday, and 10 am to 12 noon on the fourth Saturday of the month. In November 2006, The Woman's Fellowship of The Bloomfield Presbyterian Church On The Green dedicated a plaque in memory of Jeannette Brien, the Founder and Director of the pantry for over 25 years. This plaque is currently in place above the door leading into the pantry. The current director is Bruce Turnbull. For more information, please call the Church Office at 973-743-1796 during office hours, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Donations of non-perishable food are welcome and may be dropped off at the Church Office during office hours. We also accept monetary donations by making the check out to BPCOG (Bloomfield Presbyterian Church On The Green) and note for the Food Pantry, and mail to the Church address. Our food pantry is a member of the M.E.N.D. network (Meeting Emergency Needs with Dignity), serving the hungry of Essex County, since Nov. 1978, and as of March 2011, qualified to "partner" with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.

Bethany Baptist Church Food Pantry & Clothes Closet

Hours Of Operation: Monday & Thursday ONLY - 11AM-1PM; We require all clients to have a referral in order to receive services; and we accept referrals from all community based agencies and institutions, both public and private. Realizing that it is sometimes difficult to get and utilize a referral on the same day it was given, we will gladly honor a referral for any time during the month it was written. Clients may draw food from the Pantry only ONCE a month. Clients must have a referral and a picture ID each time they come. Food is distributed based on family size. If the client fails to produce necessary documents, it may result in the denial of services. We realize, however, that there may be extenuating circumstances, so each case will be determined on an individual basis. Bethany's Food Pantry will attempt to honor all food requests based on religious and health needs; however, given our limited supplies, we many not always be able to make substitutions. In those cases, we will simply remove those offending items from the client's bags. Clients should be aware that it is the Pantry administration's right to determine what, if any, type(s) of services shall be rendered.

Wednesday Food Pantry & Saturday Soup Kitchen

Wednesday Food Pantry: The Food Pantry is open Wednesdays from 10 AM to just before noon. In conjunction with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Christ Church provides fresh and boxed groceries and frozen meats to families and individuals in need. A dedicated group of parishioners gather each week to pick up and then distribute the food. Although primarily serving residents of East Orange, our actual "catchment" goes far beyond the immediate neighborhood to include residents from as far away as Irvington, South Orange and Elizabeth. Saturday Soup Kitchen: Each Saturday the Soup Kitchen opens its doors to provide a hot meal served with love and respect from 12 to 1 PM. People from other religious communities and from business organizations all over northern New Jersey make up our dedicated group of volunteers who serve on a rotating basis to provide the delicious and creative meals our guests enjoy. Things begin when the volunteers gather at about 10:30 to arrange the hall and prepare the meal. They serve it and usually provide our guests with a bag lunch to take with them. Then it's time to clean up and depart, usually by about 1 PM.

Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges

The Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges (IFPO) is a “client choice” food pantry that provides supplemental and emergency food to low-income residents of Orange and East Orange, NJ. IFPO is an all-volunteer collaborative effort of four religious congregations in Short Hills and South Orange, New Jersey - Christ Church, Congregation Beth El, Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, and Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel. The pantry is housed in the Church of the Epiphany, Orange. IFPO is one of only a few food pantries in New Jersey that offer client choice. This means that our guests have more of a grocery store experience, where clients are allocated “points,” based on family size, to select their own food, rather than receiving a pre-packaged bag of groceries. This process encourages healthy choices while also serving clients with dignity and respect. Under this system, clients do not receive food that they don’t like or cannot eat for health or personal reasons.

Christine’s Kitchen

Christine’s Kitchen is a free hot lunch program served weekly in the Guild Hall located in the lower part of the Holy Trinity Parish House. The number of guests served each week ranges from 75-100, with larger crowds coming towards the end of the month. Lunches are healthy and balanced, and include a hot entree, side dishes of vegetables, salad, fruit, bread, and dessert. Although the program is coordinated by Holy Trinity, and is located in our parish, we are grateful for the participation of many congregations and community groups in the area, who give of their time and their food. Volunteers cook, clean up, and bring all needed supplies (paper goods, etc.). If you would like more information about Christine’s Kitchen, please contact us at holytrinitywo@gmail.com.

Bobrow Kosher Food Pantry

The Bobrow Kosher Food Pantry serves the hundreds of elderly and poor of this community. The Food Pantry is staffed entirely by volunteers. All members of the congregation and the community are invited to participate in the monthly food bagging and distribution. Started in June 1991, the Bobrow Kosher Food Pantry now serves about 200 households each month. The clients we serve are a cross section of the population that are struggling with economic difficulties. We serves only Kosher food. Most people have been referred to Oheb from Jewish Family Services or other Jewish organizations, as well as a few from local social services. The food we give is a mix of donated food, USDA food that we get at no charge from the government via the Food Bank, and food we purchase from the NJ Food Bank. Most of the food we have is bought at a deep discount. For us to add an item to a bag will cost us as little as .35 for a can of vegetables or crackers to $3.50 for juice or cooking oil. This means we can buy food for less money than people would spend if they wanted to go to the store to buy food for us, so contributions of money are most effective. However, we also appreciate donations of food. All food donations must have a hechsher on the packaging and the items cannot be expired. All the work at the Bobrow Kosher Food Pantry is through volunteer support. Please consider donating your time on our Wednesday bagging nights or on our Sunday distribution mornings. Volunteer hours make for a great mitzvah project!

As an emergency food assistance program we offer food assistance at the end of each month to registered clients and of course we respond to emergency situations whenever we are able. As a member of the Catholic Charities MEND Food Network we endeavor to Meet Emergency Needs with Dignity. Each month we serve over 300 households - totaling over 700 men, women and children. We have seen an increase of those looking for assistance including the working poor, senior citizens and newly unemployed. We also have seen a decrease in our monthly government food commodities and private donations as well as an increase in the cost of food. Pantry Schedule: 3rd and 4th Fridays for Singles 10:00AM - Noon; 3rd and 4th Fridays for Families 10:00AM - Noon; Registration: 1st and 2nd Saturdays 11:30AM - 12:30 PM. St. John’s Soup Kitchen

Because the love of God demands a love of neighbor, and because the faith which underlies true prayer demands good works, St. John’s from its earliest days has sought to meet the physical as well as the spiritual needs of the people in the area. Today, St. John’s is famous not so much as an historic site as it is for its good works: over 6,000,000 breakfasts and dinners have been served to hungry people, free exhibits are held for struggling artists and the city’s school children, and thousands of toys and books are distributed to other churches and charitable institutions at Christmas. In the past three years, we have opened a Medical Services Unit staffed by a full-time nurse and two volunteer doctors, and a separate Women and Children’s Center where they can eat in peace and safety. In addition, we run a weekly food pantry handing out over 100 bags of food to assist those in need. From its earliest days, St. John’s has been a beacon to the marginal people. From harboring frightened immigrants to feeding the hungry, St. John’s has never turned its back on anyone’s physical needs while always taking care of their spiritual needs. Everything we do has its roots in the gospel; to share what we have, and to reach out and help those who cannot help themselves; to show respect for everyone as if they were “another self”; to reach out and touch people with the love of God through the love of neighbor. St. John’s is supported by free-will donations. We do not receive government funds of any kind.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Essex, New Jersey

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
