CAPI Food Shelf

CAPI USA’s Asian-specific food shelf meets the nutritional needs of 400+ food insecure Asian families each month (~2,000 individuals/month), while serving as a gateway to public benefit eligibility screening and other economic support programs (i.e., SNAP, MN Sure and SSI enrollment and referrals to programs, etc). This program also manages 9-10 community gardens each year as a vehicle to stretch family budgets, increase healthy food intake and promote leadership and community building among food shelf users. On June 19, 2013, AIGA (the professional organization of design) and CAPI (a community-based direct human services provider of anti-poverty programs for refugees and immigrant) kicked off a pilot project to improve the lives of CAPI’s food shelf participants. CAPI operates the only Asian-specific food shelf in the state of Minnesota, and the shift in where many of those who use this service live has created an opportunity to reassess the strengths and weaknesses of the food shelf. A three-person design team - Angela Wang, design strategist; Sieng Lee, design assistant; and Sook Jin Ong, public policy intern from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs - collaborated with CAPI staff and participants to better leverage existing services and explore new ways of addressing the needs of people using CAPI’s food shelf.

The Camden Promise Food Shelf

Our Food Shelf is open on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm. A Client Choice Food Shelf allows clients to choose what food they want based on a point value system. Each household is assigned point values for the month. Each food/item in the Food Shelf has a point values assigned. Most items are 1 point. There are items that are 2, 3, and 5 points. It depends on the volume, size or amount of the item. A regular 10 oz. can of soup would be 1 point. A family size can of soup, which was 24 oz. would be assigned 2 points. The number of points a household receives is determined by the number of people living in their homes. If a household has 5 people living in their household, they receive 50 points a month. Our goal is to provide food to those in need in the Camden Community of Minneapolis. We are a "Client Choice" Food Shelf which allows clients to choose what food they want based on a point value system. Our initial 18,000 pounds of food was from the Postal Service Food Drive for Second Harvest. As a Second Harvest participating agency, we receive additional donations and are able to purchase bulk discounted food from Second Harvest to supplement this initial contribution.

Neighborhood Food Shelf

The Neighborhood Food Shelf, by far our largest program, had more than 67,000 client contacts in 2012 and distributed 464,000 pounds of food. Each afternoon, Monday through Thursday, 20-35 people with food needs are interviewed. A Wednesday evening session was recently added to the food shelf hours to make it more accessible for working people who are an increasing percentage of our clientele. CES has recently sharpened its focus on its food programming. Since the installation of our new walk-in refrigerator/freezer two years ago, CES has been working to increase the distribution of fresh and frozen foods, including meat, fish, milk, bread, eggs and fresh produce. This increased capacity has been paired with new client-centered programming. We introduced a client choice model for our food shelf, where clients "shop" and choose their groceries from the food shelf rather than have volunteers pull items from the shelves. We believe that when we make the food shelf experience more like a grocery store, we better respect the dignity of our clients. Each month, CES distributes about 20 tons of food through all of the CES food distributions. This food has been donated by congregations, organizations, foundations, partner food banks and individuals or has been purchased from local food banks, often at a reduced rate.

The FOOD SHELF at Hennepin County Medical Center

THE FOOD SHELF at Hennepin County Medical Center addresses hunger and food insecurity among patients and families, with a long term vision of a hunger-free hospital and community where all families have the healthful food they need every day. The only food shelf located in the region and one of the few food shelves in the nation located in a hospital setting, The Food Shelf at Hennepin County Medical Center provides services to over twenty five hospital-based clinics and seven community clinics. Staff provide nutrient-rich foods on-site, often coupled with health and diet education, and also help patients connect to more sustained assistance programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as Food Stamps) and WIC. The program actively recruits and engages multi-lingual community volunteers and staff to assist and support this work. Currently, the program serves 3,000 households monthly with nearly 100,000 people a year, half of which are children.

First Nations’ Kitchen

First Nations’ Kitchen (FNK) is a ministry of All Saints’ Episcopal Indian Mission in Minneapolis and has been serving healthy, organic, traditional indigenous food in a welcoming, family environment every Sunday evening since November 2, 2008. While all are welcome at the table, FNK serves primarily indigenous people in the Twin Cities, particularly residents of nearby Little Earth of the United Tribes, the largest indigenous urban housing community in the U.S. FNK models environmentally sustainable practices in all aspects of the program (composting, recycling) and serve fare based on an ancestral diet of First Nations people (buffalo, wild rice, elk, fish, deer, and turkey). Every week, First Nations Kitchen also rescues and distributes fresh, organic produce both to dinner guests and to underserved people throughout the Twin Cities. The Aliveness Project - Meal Program and Food Shelf

Shared meals have been a tradition at The Aliveness Project since it was founded and today the Dining Room is the heart of our community. Here you can enjoy a hot "home-cooked" meal and make new friends. It is open to all members without reservations. Meals are served six days a week in our Dining Room. Each meal features a nutritious entree and side dishes, salad bar, soup, beverages and dessert. Children must be accompanied by a parent who is a member. Dining Room Hours - Lunch: Monday-Friday, Noon - 2:00 pm; Dinner: Monday-Thursday, 5:00 - 7:00 pm; Saturday Brunch, 11:00am - 1:00pm. Many people with HIV and AIDS live below the poverty line, or they have challenges to their monthly budget like copays for medicine. The Aliveness Project's popular Food Shelf is a vital lifeline to people who cannot come regularly to enjoy their meals at Aliveness or who have issues affording enough food to eat when the Dining Room is closed. The Food Shelf offers eligible members monthly appointments that provide enough food to prepare three to four days of meals at home. The food shelf features a “shopping” model that allows members to choose their own groceries based on their individual needs from a wide selection that includes meat, dairy and produce. Food Shelf hours are: Monday-Wednesday-Friday: 10AM – 4PM. Saturdays: 11AM – 1PM.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
