Attleboro Area Council of Churches Food n’ Friends - Family Cafés
The Attleboro Area Council of Churches Food n’ Friends has created three Family Cafés, specifically designed to be welcoming to children and accessible to families in need. By using a framework of a family outing, a fun evening with free kids activities, free food and resource assistance, Food n’ Friends Family Cafes create a safe, fun, confidential and supportive atmosphere. Food n’ Friends Kitchens always provide nutritious, quality, well-balanced meals with vegetables and fresh produce served at every meal. With the understanding that the last week of the month is the most critical for hunger, two of the Family Cafés are on the last Wednesday and Saturday of each month. Access to community and state resources are available at the Food n’ Friends Family Cafés with a resource worker present to aid families in identifying their needs and connecting them to appropriate community and state resources. This relationship-based, positive assistance provides help and empowerment on the road back to independence and security, placing another net to help stop the downward spiral into homelessness. The Family Cafés offer a free dinner for families of all shapes and sizes who need help stretching their food budget. There currently are three Family Cafes on the second and last weeks of each month. All families are welcomed to a safe, child-friendly atmosphere where a delicious dinner is served. Fun activities are provided for the children and a number of resources are available for their caregivers. All adults MUST be accompanied by a child 18 years old or younger. Dinner Served at 5:30 2nd Wednesday of the Month

Coyle and Cassidy High School Food Pantry
The Coyle and Cassidy High School Food Pantry provides approximately three hundred bags of groceries on a monthly basis to families in the Taunton area. This school sponsored outreach effort offers consistent support to families throughout the city while at the same time making our school’s motto ENTER TO LEARN - LEAVE TO SERVE a reality. Although the entire school community supports the food pantry in one way or another, the simple fact that it happens month after month is due to leadership of the student coordinators and a core group of active student volunteers. The student volunteers raise the necessary funds, stock shelves, bag groceries, and greet the families at the monthly distribution in our school’s foyer. The mission and philosophy of the food pantry is to help feed families with compassion and respect. This is accomplished in so any ways because of the generosity and enthusiasm of the student volunteers.

St. Anthony of Padua Food Pantry
St. Anthony of Padua during his lifetime had a great love for the poor and served them as if he were serving Christ. He has been invoked for centuries as a special patron of feeding the poor and needy. In many cities, there sprung up the tradition of “St. Anthony’s bread,†giving bread to those who are hungry. Here, each Thursday, from noon to 1:30 in the afternoon, our parish food pantry continues that tradition in the St. Anthony parish hall. While we are open every Thursday, our clients come on an every other week basis based on the first letter of their last name. A-L, then M-Z the following week. Over the past years, our food pantry has continued to grow. Without the support and donations of so many caring people and companies, along with the dedication of our volunteer team, this growth in providing to those in need would not be possible. In addition to providing those who participate a bag full of hearty staples and more to take home with them, we provides a warm meal of soup, sandwiches, pastries and drinks. St. Anthony Food Pantry also hosts other special services for our clients. Routinely, the Southcoast Mobile Van offers free blood pressure, cholesterol evaluations, as well as blood sugar readings to our participants within the Parish Hall. Religious classes are offered every Thursday from 11:30 A.M.-12 P.M. The classes are offered in both English and Spanish. A religious table is available offering our clients rosary beads, prayer booklets, and other religious items and religious material. We also host The Baby Project. This independently run Project, requires that those who participate first register as a food pantry participant

Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen
Our Daily Bread is a non-profit, ecumenical soup kitchen located in the parish hall of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Its purpose is to provide a free nutritious meal in a warm and welcoming atmosphere for those in need. Our Daily Bread has only a paid director and director’s assistant, therefore, the backbone of the program is its volunteers and their ability as a group to provide a very necessary, basic need in the community. Hunger is an invisible need and is often overlooked, unseen or disbelieved by many. People are being forced to make choices between paying their rent, heating their homes or putting food on their table. During the summer months and school vacations many children are fed. The changes in qualifications by our government of those who can no longer receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and the changes in our Welfare system have increased the needs of many for a nutritious food source. Our Daily Bread serves a noontime meal Monday through Friday, from 11:15 AM to 1:00 PM. Doors are open at 10:00 AM for coffee and donuts. We are "no questions asked" and do not judge those who come in for a meal. All are welcome. Those fed include the homeless, elderly, needy, lonely, deinstitutionalized and disadvantaged. The majority of the daily effort of preparing serving, and cleaning up after a meal for approximately 150 guests is the responsibility of the volunteers with the support of a paid director and director’s assistant. Guests come into the soup kitchen and sit down at their seats where they are served their meals restaurant style by volunteers. There is no shuffling through a line waiting to be handed something. It is felt that we are "food for the soul" as well as food for the body. The personal contact, recognition and conversation provided are an important part of our mission as well as trying to ease the pain of hunger. Guests are served a main meal, salad, dessert, and drink. Bread and butter are on the tables if needed. We serve what most would consider the main meal of the day, such as spaghetti and meatballs, fish dinner, or homemade stews. Seconds are also available if desired. We have a direct impact on the greater community by providing the very basic need of food to those less fortunate in a safe and friendly environment. We are a vital organization that strives to provide dignity and stability to our guests by making a positive difference in their lives and to fight the invisible problem of hunger in our communities.

The Shepherd's Pantry
The Shepherd's Pantry was formed in 2000 in a joint effort to help feed the hungry in the general Fairhaven area. A group of volunteers from five Fairhaven churches: The Church of Good Shepherd, St. Mary's, St. Joseph's, Unitarian Memorial and Trinity Lutheran, gathered a few bags of groceries and handed them out on a cold January morning to about 12 people. We now serve an average of 300 people per week, not only from Fairhaven and New Bedford, but also from as far away as Taunton and Fall River, Marion, Acushnet, Mattapoisett, Rochester, Lakeville and Freetown. Today, more than 100 unpaid volunteers work 4 days per week to process donations of food, stock shelves, fill bags and distribute to clients. We are open to the public on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon. We give food to anyone who asks, without restrictions.... without questions (aside from the information we need to administer the program). Clients are asked to come once every 4 weeks so that we can help as many people as possible. We became an incorporated non-profit organization in July 2002. Contributions to the Pantry are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. The Shepherd's Pantry is operated in accordance with U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, age, handicap, religion or place of national origin. The Shepherd's Pantry is run entirely by volunteers. There are no paid staff members. If you feel we are providing something of value to the community and wish to show your appreciation, you can assist the Shepherd's Pantry and its users with a tax-deductible contribution.

Drive-thru Food Pantries
Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.
Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?
Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.
Only two piece of information is asked
- You Zipcode, and
- Number of people in their family.
You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.
How do drive-thru pantries actually work?
There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:
Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.
Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.
Checkin.
You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.
Food is loaded into the cars.
Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.
Pet Food Pantry
One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.
The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in New Bedford, Massachusetts
Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry
Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:
- All ages, races and marital status
- Unemployed or underemployed
- Retired, living on social security or other limited income
- Physically or mentally disabled
- Experiencing homelessness or housing instability
Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry
Show up early.
This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.
You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.
Remember all documentation.
Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.
This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.
It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.
Use several food banks.
Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.
For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.
Eligible for other programs?
Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.
They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.
Ask about extras.
If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.
Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.
Go on different days of the week.
Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.
Be polite to workers.
Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.
FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)
1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?
Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.
2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?
Specifically, food banks often need items like:
- Peanut butter
- Canned soup
- Canned fruit
- Canned vegetables
- Pasta
- Canned beans
- Canned stew
- Canned fish
3. Who can go to food pantry?
At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.
4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?
A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.
5. How does a food pantry work?
Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
