Beth-El Temple Church of Christ Soup Kitchen

In verse 35 of the Gospel according to Matthew, it states, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. . .” The burden to feed the hungry fell on Missionary Roslyn Wright. On Wednesday, February 25, 2009, the Beth-El Temple Soup Kitchen became a reality. On this day, three people would enter through the doors to be fed with a staff of fifteen willing and ready to serve. On this day, more than just food was provided. . . clothes from the Clothing Closet were distributed, prayer and an encouraging words were imparted, information was provided for employment, medical and housing referrals and assistance as well as counselors for drug addiction. Considering most meals are prepared by the hands of our qualified and anointed staff , the soup kitchen have had several sponsors to assist with providing meals through actual meals or monetary donations. Such sponsors include Nehemiah House, Maryland Food Bank, St. Vincent DePaul, CanCan, Woodmere Neighborhood Association, McDonalds, Mother Corrine Pender (MCP) Helping Hands Ministry of Beth-El Temple Church of Christ, Mr. Bogus & Sister Felicia Lockett. On average, the soup kitchen will feed approximately fifty-five people per week. Since the soup kitchen has been in existence, they have fed over 2,500 people and counting

Severn Christian Church Food Pantry

If we want to transition from 'churchianity' to 'Christianity' we must not only restore Biblical doctrine but also restore Biblical community. From the very beginning the early church made sure that everyone had the basic necessities of life (Acts 2:44-45; 4:32-35). We here at SCC want it said of us that 'there is not a needy one among them'. The Food Pantry is a way that we can share, have all things in common, take care of each other and give something back. We invite everyone to give or receive from our pantry as we continue to grow as a family of God.

Perry Hall United Methodist Church Food Pantry

Perry Hall UMC has operated an emergency Food Pantry since 1982. We will provide meals for 3 days, 3 meals each day, the amount of food determined by the number in the family. Our shelves are kept furnished with non-perishable, nutritious foods through the warm generosity of the members of PHUMC, and through the government program of sharing surplus foods. A typical grocery order will include spaghetti and spaghetti sauce, macaroni and cheese, soups, pork and beans, several vegetables, several fruits, stew or canned chicken, tuna fish, canned salmon, peanut butter, dry cereal, and perhaps pancake mix and syrup. We always give toilet paper, since that commodity is not covered by food stamps. The food pantry is on the ground floor next to the back door of the church. Mount Zion United Methodist Church - Open Door Food Pantry

The Open Doors Food Pantry opened on July 20th 2013, and on July 19th 2014, we will celebrate our 1 Year Anniversary! It has not been an easy year, and we all learn from our mistakes. Pam Gebhardtsbauer, Debbie Burgio, and I took a huge leap of faith and pushed toward getting a food pantry started at our church, which is something that was never dreamed of as be-ing needed in Highland, MD. The first month we opened, we had 7 families that were in need of food. In April we had a record number of families show up for food 40 families. We've now partnered with the MD Food Bank, Panera Bread in the Columbia Mall, McDonalds in Clarksville, Dunkin Donuts in Clarksville and Atholton High School's Feed The Future Service Club. We no longer have to depend upon you to pro-vide all the food for the clients, or the coupons. Since we partnered with the MD Food Bank a few years ago, we can buy food for as little as 17 cents per pound. All donations and volunteers are geatly appreciated! Thank you all!

Adventist Community Services of Greater Washington (ACSGW)

Adventist Community Services of Greater Washington (ACSGW) collects food donations from throughout the community and keeps it available at our center for people who need some assistance. The food that is available varies throughout the month. It just depends on what ACSGW has received. Typically, we have nonperishable food, such as canned goods and pastas, as well as perishable food, such as fruits and vegetables. Sometimes we meat or poultry for our clients. Usually, we also have breads.

Qualified clients can visit the center once a month for food. People needing food must first visit our center to talk with a case manager to explain their need and provide the information necessary to ensure they meet current qualifications. You can request an appointment with a case manager by calling us at 301-585-6556. People who qualify can receive food the same day. Since we often provide more food than a person can carry, you should consider bringing a shopping cart or someone else with you to help you carry the food home.

Rainbow Community Development Center Inc

The Rainbow Community Development Center (RCDC), Inc.’s mission is building better lives for those in need. We have been helping families to become self-sufficient and became a non profit entity. One of our programs is the Food Pantry.

With food prices soaring, obesity, diabetes and other health-related diseases are on the incline. Healthy, nutritious foods (such as fresh produce) are more expensive and less likely to be purchased, a factor in many health-related issues.

The RCDC Community Food Distribution program consists of the food pantry and nutritional education programs geared toward serving low-income individuals and families in need.

This program is staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers. Our pantry is the only pantry in the local area that provides fresh produce on a consistent weekly basis. Clients are served from throughout the Maryland, DC and Virginia area and can self-refer based on need.

Since the inception of the agency we have embraced the holistic approach for providing services. Tending to the clients physical, emotional, and/or spiritual needs is part of this approach. Every client is different and struggling with the different hurdles which are in front of them. Some are struggling with the poverty that they are living in and many have additional struggles dealing with mental illness, homelessness, drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, abuse, as well as other stressors. The Drop-In-Center provides services beginning with the morning meal from 8.00 to 10:15 am daily and continues from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m (Monday through Friday). We serve an average of 176 men, women and children everyday. The meal we serve may be eggs, potatoes, oatmeal, fruit and coffee, or it may be chicken cordon blue with all the trimmings. The menu is largely dependant on the donations that we receive. During the Drop-In-Center hours, many services are provides. Among other services, clients are given access to a phone to make important phone calls, given the chance to fill out a clothing form to request a bag of clothes (clothes which have been donated to Manna House and sorted by volunteers), given the chance to take a nice warm shower with toiletries provided, provided with food vouchers to a local food pantry, assisted with applying for birth certificates/ID's, assistance with completing paperwork, given bus tokens for documented appointments, and access to case management. Many clients just need someone who will listen to them, without being judgmental . . . that can be the biggest service of them all!

Lutheran Mission Society - Immanuel Compassion Center

The mission field is not all overseas. It is also right here, in our own neighborhoods, where people are struggling and hurting and hungering for the wholeness Jesus brings. This is the call the Lutheran Mission Society heard over 100 years ago, and the call that still drives LMS ministries today — ministering to the needs of the body with food, clothing and shelter; ministering to the needs of the soul with the Good News of Jesus. LMS Compassion Centers exist for this purpose. There are currently nine Compassion Centers in Maryland and York, PA where over 500 people come daily for help with the physical necessities of life and for the nourishment of spirit that only Jesus can give. Franciscan Center - Food Services

Dining Program: Roughly 400 to 600 people come into the Franciscan Center daily to partake in the Hot Lunch Program and enjoy a hot, healthy meal prepared on-site using fresh ingredients. In the past fiscal year, the Center served 102,395 meals. In partnership with the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, the Center has adopted a healthy food initiative and regularly provides highly nutritious meals that contain fresh fruits and vegetables as well as high quality proteins. The Franciscan Center is also the first “soup kitchen” in the country to participate in the national Meatless Monday initiative. Every Monday, the Center serves a delicious vegetarian meal such as lentil shepherd’s pie, vegetable lasagna, or three-bean meatless chili. We now offer our “Supper Club,” an evening meal each Wednesday. Gleaning Projects: Working in partnership with Johns Hopkins, United Way, and Gather Baltimore, the Franciscan Center has gleaned thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables and fruits to serve to our neighbors in need. This program has expanded to include donations from area farmer’s markets, supermarkets and restaurants. Gleaning has made it possible for the Center to cut our cost per meal served nearly in half, while at the same time increasing exponentially the quality and nutritional value of the food we provide to poor and hungry citizens of Baltimore. Every Tuesday night, volunteers chop vegetables for the week ahead. Pantry Program: The healthy food initiative has also extended to the Center’s Emergency Pantry. We offer clients the option of receiving a regular bag of groceries or a healthy bag, which is stocked with low fat, low sodium items such as brown rice, ground turkey, fresh and frozen vegetables rather than canned. We’re pleased to report that more than 40% of our clients are now choosing this healthy bag. The Franciscan Center is tracking the progress of each participant through weekly surveys. Participants also receive educational materials, access to guest speakers, and had a trip to One Straw Farm to see where their produce is grown. The project would not be possible without funding from the United Way of Central Maryland, and our other partners including, University of Maryland Extension Food Supplement Nutrition Education Program (FSNE), the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, Molly Shattuck Vibrant Living, Coldwell Banker, and One Straw Farm.

CAN Food Pantry

Community Assistance Network, Inc (CAN) provides emergency food to income eligible Baltimore County residents. The Emergency Food Package is meant only as a supplement and provides enough food for approximately 5 to 7 days. CAN attempts to provide food from the major food groups so that each package is nutritionally balanced. However, the contents of each package is dependent upon donations that we receive. Therefore, the contents of packages will vary from day to day. Eligibility for emergency food packages is determined through the following documents: 1) some form of photo identification with current address 2) proof of household income 3) Social Security card(s). Eligible recipients may receive emergency food only once every 30 calendar days. Volunteers from the Baltimore Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association help fill our Holiday Food boxes. CAN serves approximately 1,000 emergency food packages each month. In December of each year, we serve an additional 1,500 Holiday Food boxes.

GEDCO North East Food Pantry

GEDCO's North East Food Pantry serves individuals in crisis by connecting customers with emergency food relief that will enable movement towards self-sufficiency. The heart and compassion of this entirely volunteer-run program drives them to ensure that everyone leaves with food. In 1982, when an Ad Hoc committee realized the great need within their community for additional emergency food resources for families and individuals with low incomes, they opened the North East Food Pantry. The North East Food Pantry is open five days a week, Monday-Friday from 10:30am-1:30pm. Not only are there hours widespread, but they are unique to the Hamilton, Arcadia and Harbel neighborhoods (212 zipcodes) in northeast Baltimore City. NE Food Pantry belongs to the MD Food Banks' Network Partners Area Councils (NPAC), which connects food banks so that they may share challenges and solutions with one another.

Oaklands Emergency Food Pantry

The Oaklands Emergency Food Pantry has provided non-perishable food to Laurel residents in need since 1990. Recipients that meet Government eligibility requirements are referred to Oaklands by LARS. The food is provided by the Federal Government, the State of Maryland, and donations from our congregation and local community. Oaklands planted an onsite garden to supply fresh produce to the food pantry including tomatoes, squash, peppers, and green beans. Although we have Government and state assistance, donations are always needed to meet the demand. A collection basket is located in the narthex. Monetary donations are graciously accepted if you would prefer that our food pantry committee purchase the most critically needed items. Checks for the food pantry can either be placed in the offering plate or given to the office with “food pantry” noted in the check memo.

Shepherd’s Table

The food service program is at the heart of the mission of Shepherd’s Table. Through the extraordinary efforts of thousands of volunteers, dedicated staff and countless donors, the evening meal has been served without interruption since December, 1983. That’s 32+ years of feeding hungry people in our community. In November of 2008, we served our 1,000,000th meal.On Sunday, December 16, 2012 we served our first brunch meal, beginning our 30th year of service. Through a special appeal in October 2012, funding for the Thierry Musel Brunch Program was secured for 2013. No longer will our clients and dinner guests be hungry during the day on the weekends. Thanks to all of our donors and volunteers for bringing this program to life. Shepherd’s Table is mightily blessed with the support of the local Silver Spring community, folks throughout Montgomery County and the greater DC region. Strong financial support, consistent donations of in-kind gifts, amazing food recovery from local grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries and farmer’s markets along with the fabulous service by volunteers, and a dedicated staff all combine to make the evening meal and brunch program possible. Our dinner/brunch volunteers are composed of a wide array of people: adults, youth, young adults, court ordered folks, service learning students and teams of people from churches and synagogues, businesses and schools, and organizations throughout the area. Brunch Meal Served Saturday and Sunday, 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.; Evening Meals Served Daily, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

FISH of Laurel, Inc. Elizabeth House

Seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, the volunteers in the Elizabeth House kitchen prepare and serve a hot meal to our homeless clients. Meal preparation crews of about 3 to 5 people prepare a meal and make bag lunches. Serving crews of about 4 to 6 people serve the clients and clean up the kitchen, bathroom and dining areas at the end of the evening. About forty-five people arrive for dinner every evening around 6:00 pm and most will pick up a bag lunch on their way out. Sometimes a generous donor will have previously dropped off travel-size toiletries that the volunteers put into a grab basket on the sign-in desk.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Drive-thru food pantries are a convenient and efficient way to distribute food to neighbors in need. They are open to anyone — no eligibility requirements or income verification needed.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

You will typically only need to provide:

  • Your zip code, and
  • Number of people in your household.

No appointment is needed. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first-served — plan to arrive early as lines can fill quickly.

How do drive-thru pantries work?

Volunteers and staff manage the distribution line. Here is how most drive-thru pantries operate:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the distribution area.

Visitors pull up in their car and are guided into a clearly marked queue. Staff move cars forward to keep the line moving quickly.

Check-in.

You may be asked to provide your zip code and household size for the pantry's records.

Food is loaded into your car.

Pre-packed bags of food — typically including shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit, and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats — are loaded by volunteers directly into your trunk.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Ellicott City, Maryland

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
