The Salvation Army Chicago Blue Island and Community Center - Food Pantry

The Salvation Army Chicago Blue Island and Community Center serves our communities in the Blue Island area by providing food supplies for families and individuals in need. We do this every Wednesday and we partner with the Chicago Food Depository to provide as many supplies as we can to the people in need we serve. The food Pantry has the following schedule: 9:00am to 12:00pm, and 1pm to 4pm. We serve on a basis of first come first serve. However, all our clients receive the same kind and amount of goods every Wednesday. Individuals and families can bring an ID, proof of address, paycheck tab and documents to prove family dependent on the first visit. We also ask that our clients visit once every 30 days to give room to other people to benefit from this service.

Vineyard Christian Church of Evanston

We distribute bagged groceries to families in need. The Evanston Vineyard Food Pantry (previously "The Harvest") opened in January 2005 serving 3-5 families a week. Our ministry has grown and we now serve 250 families each week. The Evanston Vineyard Food Pantry serves anyone who needs to make ends meet.

- Patrons are welcome to come twice a month per household/same address.
- Patrons are allowed one visit per household per date.
- Patrons are required to provide only their name and address for our data base and to receive food. (This is a requirement of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, of which The Evanston Vineyard Food Pantry is a member agency. This info is not shared in other way and is solely used for a patron to receive food.)
- Patrons must sign-in at each visit to receive food.
- Patrons can expect to receive pre-bagged nonperishable staple items as well as selecting some other items (such items may include meat, produce, bread and dairy).
- IDs are required for patrons and for proxy pick-ups (see note)

ID Policy
Photo ID with address (address must be current within 30 days). If patron forgets photo ID & is already registered in the database, a utility bill or other non-photo documentation will be accepted one time. A note will be made in database & patron will be turned away next time this happens.

Number Distribution System
- When our doors open and patrons file in, a random number will be selected from a bag. This means there is no need to come early and wait, and no standing in line for hours prior to opening.
- If you are first in the door it does NOT guarantee you will be the first to be served.

The food pantry is open every Wednesday from 6PM to 8PM and is part of the Evanston Vineyard Care Center.

First Bethlehem Lutheran Church - Food Pantry

We pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” For some people in our neighborhood, we are the answer to their prayer. One of the ways in which we help our neighbors is through our weekly food pantry, which is open on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. Each week we serve around 60 to 70 clients. Two-thirds of them are homeless, while the other third are bringing groceries to their families.

United Church of Rogers Park Community Feast/Soup Kitchen

The United Church of Rogers Park Community Feast/Soup Kitchen served it’s first dinner on October 7, 1984. The inspiration and commitment to see what we could do to engage with those in our neighborhood in need, began through a small covenant group of the church. We met to learn how to journey with God not just inwardly, but also outwardly (following the model described in a book by Elizabeth O’Conner called Journey Inward, Journey Outward). The idea of doing a Soup Kitchen began with a concern expressed by one member; a desire to make use of the church's little used kitchen; a visit to a neighboring soup kitchen; and, a message from scripture for that week about Jesus feeding the 5,000 with five loaves and two fish (Matthew 14). We decided we could afford to try it for a month and see how it went. It has been a journey; one of struggling to know who would help, where the food and money would come from; finding supplies and equipment to use; and, how to deal with all the people. But the journey has also been one of many blessings. We always had something to cook, people to help and, wonderful people coming to eat. Over the years, as our equipment and kitchen began to wear out, we were also blessed to find people willing to help us improve. So, today we have a beautiful new kitchen, our guests, new lightweight tables and chairs, and MANY wonderful volunteers.

New Hope Community Food Pantry

New Hope Community Food Pantry serves as an emergency food source for neighbors in the 60630, 60631, 60646, and 60656 zip codes. We serve clients every Tuesday from 9:30 am-11:30 am from the basement of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Norwood Park. We provide a three-to-five day supply of food to eligible families in need once per month. We seek to provide all that is needed for a well-balanced diet, although we recognize that the food we are able to distribute is only meant to supplement not provide all of the household's needs. We refer clients who have additional and specific needs to other available resource providers, give clients some training in nutrition and budgeting, and educate the community about hunger in our area and in the world.

Everyone is served the first time they come to the pantry, no matter where they live. Visitors from outside our service area are referred to a food pantry that operates in their locale.

Client Requirements:

Please have a valid ID or current bill in your name at an address in the following zip codes: 60630, 60631, 60646, or 60656. You will also need to provide information about household members and confirm that your total household income falls within a specific range based upon the number of family members. Once you have become a NHCFP client, you are able to visit once per calendar month.

Once you have completed your food shopping, please feel free to visit the Chic Boutique in the church basement. There are gently-loved clothes, shoes, toys, books, or small household items available. Volunteers will be happy to help you find what you need.

It is our pleasure to be of service to you for as long as you need us.

Quinn Community Center

The Quinn Community Center Hunger Ministry food pantry, Fridays, provides unprepared food and grocery products to families from Maywood and Broadview as well as the sharing of hot meals. The Hunger Ministry receives no city, state, or federal money for its operation. We rely upon St. Eulalia's parishioners help and the help of other institutions working in the community to support our mission.

Our Soup Kitchen is a weekly, on Tuesday evenings, year-round soup kitchen offers a complete meal to guests from many different walks of life. About 50 people are served each week-more than half are children and the rest are adults, seniors, and families. Although some guests are homeless, many are the working poor from the surrounding communities.

Common Pantry

Our weekly emergency food distributions are intended to provide individuals and families enough food for 4-5 days. Those in need are allowed to attend one Wednesday distribution session per calendar month. During the distribution, clients living within our service boundaries receive a well-rounded assortment of food items. The first step is the shopping experience, where clients can choose items they prefer or are in specific need of by using “points.” Points are allotted based on the number of individuals in the household. Bread, produce, meats, canned goods, USDA commodities, and various private donations are packed in addition by volunteers while the client “shops.” Dietary restrictions are accommodated as much as possible. To be fair and to eliminate the need to arrive extremely early, we hand out numbers in a lottery fashion 30 minutes before each session for those that must arrive early. After that, numbers are available on a first come-first serve basis. We ask that clients do not arrive extremely early for a distribution session.

We distribute food every Wednesdays; 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Self Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines

In 1971, the Women’s Fellowship Circle of the First Congregational Church of Des Plaines established the Self Help Closet & Pantry, which offered food, clothing and small household items to Des Plaines’ needy. A small group of about 10 women operated the SHC&P in the church basement for several years. As the client base increased, the Pantry has moved its facility several times to the present location at 600 E. Algonquin Road. In 1987, the Pantry incorporated as an independent, not-for-profit organization. Today it is governed by a Board of Directors and has a volunteer staff of about 70 and one part-time employee serving as Executive Director. The Pantry serves an average of 1000 persons per month as compared to 800 per month in 2008. New clients are registered each Tuesday and Saturday. Local schools, churches, businesses, fraternal organizations, and individuals, as well as the city of Des Plaines, provide the majority of food and financial support to the Pantry. The Pantry’s trademark “Red Barrels” serve as a visual reminder of the Pantry and are to be found in about 50 locations around town. Donors can drop their non-perishable food items in these barrels where volunteers collect them for the Pantry.

Northfield Township Food Pantry

The Northfield Township Food Pantry was started over 40 years ago to assist Township residents who are unable to provide enough food for themselves and their families. In April 2003, the Pantry became a 501c3 organization and an agency of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Today, many hundreds of Township families are eligible to visit the Pantry to receive perishable and non-perishable food items and grocery store cards. No tax dollars are used to supply the Pantry. The Pantry is sustained entirely by residents, civic organizations, schools, businesses and the faith community who generously donate food items, grocery store cards and cash. The Pantry's mission is simple: Hunger is Unacceptable in Our Community.

Maine Township Emergency Food Pantry

The Maine Township Emergency Food Pantry provides food on an emergency basis to persons living in the greater Maine Township area. To receive assistance on a continuing basis you must reside in Maine Township. The first Maine Township Food Pantry program began in 1981 when the Township gave out fifteen food baskets during the Christmas season. By 1984 the Emergency Food Pantry had established itself as a regular but relatively minor program under the auspices of the General Assistance department, providing twenty-five baskets of food per month and maintaining its food supply in a single closet. In 1989 the program expanded to a large storage room in the basement of the Township Hall. Today the Emergency Food Pantry supplies 150 boxes of food every month, which go towards feeding over 300 individuals. Each box is hand packed by township staff and volunteers with dozens of non-perishable food items to help supplement the needs of township residents in distress. The food pantry is open for residents Tuesday and Friday from 1-4:30 PM.

Niles Township Food Pantry

People are surprised to learn that even in our “affluent” communities there are many people, young, elderly and in-between, who do not have the resources to feed themselves or their families adequately. That is why the Niles Township Food Pantry exists – to aid those who need food, especially on an emergency basis. We want to make sure that every person has the food they need to sustain themselves, so we are always seeking donations to help the over 3,500 individuals (on average) who use our pantry every month. With these bad economic times, the number of people who need the food pantry keeps increasing. This past holiday season, the Niles Township Food Pantry has supplied food to more than 5,500 individuals alone. Hours: Monday – Friday 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Tuesday - 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. and Evening 4:15 - 7:00 p.m., Friday - 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.

Wheeling Food Pantry

In our first two years of operation we have distributed over 50,000 pounds of food. We are a 100% volunteer pantry. Our offices, utilities, overhead and storage facilities are donated. Because of these generous benefactors, we are able to use 100% of any cash donations for food and packaging. We are an agency of the Greater Chicago Food Depository where we are able to purchase food at a deep discount. Also, we are a 501c3 corporation. Therefore, in most cases, cash donations are tax deductible. Your donations will be used to purchase food when our supplies have diminished. The food will be distributed to those families of children who attend District 21 middle schools, Wheeling High School, and the residents of Wheeling. We are open 4 hours every weekday so that those in need can stop by for help. Both the Village of Wheeling and Omni Youth Services provide Resource Specialists, trained social workers, who are there to help those less fortunate. Our mission is to try to help those in need, in some way, with their financial, physical and/or emotional problems so that they may lead normal, self-sustaining independent lives. There are reasons behind why someone is hungry. It’s about more than food. Hours of Operation: Monday through Thursday - 1:00pm - 5:00pm, Friday - 1:00pm - 4:00pm

New Trier Township Food Pantry

The Food Pantry is open by appointment only to qualified residents of New Trier Township, which includes the villages of Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, and Glencoe, plus portions of Glenview and Northfield. The Pantry is located at the Township Office, 739 Elm Street in Winnetka. Established in 1965, the New Trier Township Food Pantry serves as a bridge between those who have the ability to give and those who are in need. Through donations from the community and volunteer efforts the shelves are stocked with a variety of canned and packaged food, frozen foods, useful paper goods, and toiletry items. A freezer is stocked with vegetables, meat, poultry, and nutritious frozen dinners. In order to qualify for assistance, a social worker meets with the individual making the request and determines if they are eligible for assistance. At that time, the social worker can also inform the individual of other assistance programs.

TCI Food Pantry

The TCI Food Pantry is one of the ways we are reaching out to our communities and striving to minister to the physical needs of people. We started out early 2013 and have since seen a huge growth in the number of people we feed. We are affiliates of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Our food pantry is open to the public and appointments can be made by reaching out to our team of volunteers. Through public outreach, we let the community know about our other efforts and programs and it is our hope that members of the community will come to the pantry to receive food at no cost. Everyone is welcome to come in. We are open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 1pm and Tuesday to Thursdays by appointments only.

Beth Emet Soup Kitchen

Each week, through the generous commitment of many volunteers, the Beth Emet Soup Kitchen serves over 100 guests a nutritious dinner - one that we would be proud to serve our own families. Guests sit at white linen covered tables, often enjoying live background music while they dine. Everyone receives a sack lunch ‘to go’ as they leave. The Soup Kitchen has been a "bridge of understanding" between the Beth Emet Jewish community and the many guests who dine with us each week. The Soup Kitchen truly brings to life the Jewish value of tikkun olam – repair of the world. Some volunteers purchase, prepare and serve the food while others set up the dining room. More volunteers come wash the dishes, trays and clean the kitchen and dining room. It is a true team effort and a really rewarding experience for everyone!

Soup at Six

Since 1983, Soup at Six has provided dinner from the basement gym of the Hemenway United Methodist Church, 933 Chicago Ave. Our Evanston soup kitchen feeds the hungry every Tuesday night at 4:30pm. Some volunteers arrive early, around 2pm to start the cooking. Around 10-20 volunteers arrive around 3:30pm - 4pm to serve and clean up. We prepare enough food to feed the 100 or so people who attend this free weekly dinner. Soup at Six is an independent, non-sectarian non-profit organization, funded completely from donations and gifts. There is no fancy board to organize fundraisers and no overhead costs. Each penny that is donated goes directly to feed our guests. "One way or another, we figure out a way to keep it open," said Mike Murdock, a volunteer since 1988. The volunteers are very creative and efficient, stretching their funds to prepare soup, a starch, a couple of fresh salads, an entree dessert and bread every week, as well as a sack lunch for guests to take with them. "We give people a ton of food and our cost is around $2 a head," Murdock said. "We serve a great free meal with dignity."

Benton House - Food Pantry

In order to address food insecurity in our community, Benton House partners with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to provide a community food pantry in the Bridgeport neighborhood. The Food Pantry takes place in Benton House’s Pearse Gymnasium and newly renovated Ramova Room, at 3034 S Gratten ave. Our Food Pantry distribution occurs Fridays from 12 Noon until 2 pm. Our resources allow us to give families one full box of food per month; items including, but not limited to: fresh produce (fruit & vegetables), meat, bread, grains (pasta & rice), dairy items, and an assortment of canned items. While we do not turn anyone away, it is strongly encouraged to have a valid ID or other proof of residency upon registration. This helps us to know how often folks are attending our food pantry and which areas of the Bridgeport community are being served.

Care for Real - Food Pantry

Clients can come to Care for Real once a month for staple food items...rice, beans, peanut butter, etc. Plus, they can come up to four times a week for the fresh produce and bread that is so generously donated by neighborhood groceries and bakeries. Yet the average CFR client "shops" for staples at the pantry just seven times a year. CFR is their safety net during especially hard times. On average, CFR distributes almost 60,000 pounds of food each month. We purchase most of our staple foods from the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Local retailers, including Dominick's, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Intelligentsia Coffee, Starbuck's Coffee, True Nature Foods and Flourish Bakery, regularly donate produce and bakery goods. And the community supports Care for Real with individual donations and food drives sponsored by houses of worship, schools, businesses, block clubs and residential buildings. Purchased food is selected for variety, nutrition and with respect for religious beliefs and ethnic preferences. For the homeless, CFR distributes specially packaged foods that do not require refrigerated storage, can openers or cooking. In addition, Care for Real provides special food baskets for Thanksgiving, Eid al-Fitr and Christmas to make those holidays brighter for our neighbors. We also provide children's diapers and cleaning and personal-hygiene products as well as home health care items (canes, adult incontinence items, skin care, etc.) when they are available

Franciscan Outreach - Marquard Center Kitchen

The Marquard Center Dining Room, located at 1645 W. LeMoyne in the Wicker Park/Bucktown community, serves nutritious meals to 100 individuals every night of the year. Although we are called a soup kitchen, our meals often consist of a main course, side dishes, milk, coffee, bread, dessert and beverages. While eating, guests are encouraged to talk and get to know each other. We strive to recognize our guests by name and encourage them to speak with our available case managers. It is our hope that by putting our guests in contact with the people who can aid them in finding services, they might find the resources they need to start building a better life. The meal is served at 5:00 PM every night. On Wednesdays, additional services such as mental health outreach, drop-in case management, medical attention, and substance abuse counseling are available beforehand during the day. We also offer shower facilities, the only free drop-off laundry service in the city, a mailing address, and use of telephones. All of these extra services contribute to guests maintaining a sense of personal dignity, as well as making connections to a better future.

Liberty In Christ Center - Food Pantry

We firmly believe that feeding the poor is a Biblical mandate for all Christians. Liberty Center is our primary food distribution center. Based in the Little Village Neighborhood in South West Chicago, the food pantry is open to distribute food and hope to the neighborhood. Last year our pantry distributed 52 tons of food and so far we have used over $25,000 of food. We also distribute blankets and baby clothing as it is donated. Most of the food we distribute is purchased for pennies on the dollar at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. We gladly accept in kind donations of canned and boxed goods. However, given the ability to purchase canned goods, fresh fruits, and frozen meats so inexpensively, a dollar donated goes farther than a dollar spent on a food and then donated. Marillac Food Pantry

Marillac’s Food Pantry serves individuals and families on the West Side of Chicago by providing food, nutrition and health education, and connection to a variety of other needed resources. Marillac House Food Pantry is a member agency of the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s network of 650 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters. In 2011, Marillac received recognition from GCFD for demonstrating best practices in serving our clients. Our service area is considered a “food desert” – meaning there is a significant lack of access to healthy, affordable food – especially fresh produce. According to a 2011 Greater Chicago Food Depository study, there are over 50,000 food insecure residents living in the communities we serve. The poverty rate averages over 30%, and in East Garfield Park and North Lawndale, it is 43%. As these statistics clearly demonstrate, there is a critical need for food assistance programs in these communities. In the past two years, there have been food pantries closing in our area, as well as other pantries further limiting their service boundaries. Consequently, Marillac’s food pantry continues to serve more families every month. Marillac served an average of 500 families per month in 2010. In 2012, Marillac’s food pantry has served over 1,000 families each month. A record-breaking 1,357 families were served in October 2012. Our pantry is Client Choice, meaning that clients are able to pick out food that best fits their families’ needs, rather than receiving a pre-packed bag of groceries. Client Choice empowers clients to make nutrition and health decisions for themselves and their families. It also promotes a welcoming and respectful environment in which clients access needed services. We offer a variety of healthy options including fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat, and bread.

Onward Neighborhood House Food Pantry

At Onward Neighborhood House, we try to bring simple benefits to our families like healthy, well balanced meals. Through a partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, we have recently opened a client-choice food pantry across the street from our Belmont Cragin center at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. The food pantry is be client-choice, so visitors to the food pantry will be able to select items from different “food stations,” and shop like at a supermarket. Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc. generously donated 10 shopping carts for clients to use while shopping at the food pantry. Each food station will be different, and may include fruits, vegetables, dairy, frozen meats, bread and grains and breakfast foods. The “client-choice” opportunity will provide more freedom and dignity to the food pantry process, said Onward Neighborhood House’s Executive Director, Mario Garcia. Clients will be able to select their products, much like shopping at a small neighborhood grocer. As demand increases, Onward Neighborhood House anticipates increasing the food pantry’s availability to twice a week. The pantry will be open from 4 – 6 p.m. on Thursdays. The pantry is located in the basement of St. Peter’s Church, 2805 N. Linder Avenue.

Our Lady of Lourdes Soup Kitchen

Our Lady of Lourdes Soup Kitchen was started in 1980 as a Lenten project. A few of the initial founders are Rosemary Vallely, Helen Cosgrove and John Klemanovic. They continue to help as possible. In the beginning, food was begged from various sources. Now we are able to purchase from the Greater Chicago Food Depository and we are often blessed with food donations from local stores and restaurants. In the early days dinners were put on actual dinner plates that would have to be washed. Today we use Styrofoam. This cuts time and makes the soup kitchen easier to manage. We serve up to 300 meals per week. We have always had cooked meals and have never served soup. Our guests leave with a sack lunch. When quantities of left over food are large enough, they are distributed to the guests in to-go containers. In addition, we are blessed to have two outside agencies that assist us during the year. Our Lady or Ransom Parish comes on the fourth week in the odd numbered months during the school year. They provide all the food. They also participate at Thanksgiving and have a large clothing drive to provide warm clothes for the clients. The Ancient Order of Hibernians is another group that participates and they also provide the food. They participate the week before Thanksgiving, the Wednesday before Christmas Week and the Wednesday before Easter. The hours of operation for the soup kitchen are from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

Ravenswood Community Services

Every Tuesday night, between 250 and 350 neighbors come to our Food Pantry seeking a bag of groceries. We provide a nutritionally balanced grocery bag to each person, which includes fresh milk, bread and meat. We also offer a “no-kitchen” option with easy-to-fix items and pop-top lids for our neighbors who primarily live on the streets. Our Community Kitchen provides a family-style meal for more than 120 neighbors each week. Teams of dedicated volunteers prepare and serve a hot entrée, vegetable, bread and often dessert. The majority of our patrons reside within a twelve-block area but some travel from as far as the South Side for our meal and fellowship. Several times a year, our dining hall is transformed into a four-star restaurant called the All Saints’ Café. At our Café, our neighbors enjoy choosing a gourmet multi-course meal from a specially prepared menu. Choices include wonderful delights such as prime rib, Oriental stir-fry and Greek chicken. They are also attended to by a wait staff and surrounded by music and entertainment. We partner with Ravenswood School in hopes of ensuring a powerful future for young people in our neighborhood. We produce the “Reality Fair,” a three-dimensional manifestation of the popular board game Life. This virtual game teaches 8th graders practical life skills through choices and financial realities, and it helps students consider their futures. In our newest program, “focus:future,” mentors guide soon-to-be-graduating students through the stressful and competitive high school program application process.

RTW Veteran Center - Soup Kitchen

The RTW Veteran Center has been serving hot meals from 10AM to 6PM to those without for over 3 years, and it hasn’t been an easy task. RTW Veteran Center volunteers pick up food every night to stock up for the next busy day. And With our 2012 rate of service, we provided over 4,000 meals a month. Students from the culinary art school Le Cordon Bleu have recognized the Veteran Center as an important community service in the south side of Chicago and have joined in our efforts by volunteering. These resourceful chefs pull together amazing dishes using bare minimum resources to give the needy a good, wholesome and nutritious meal. While eating, our Center provides entertainment through educational content as our staff members go over options with those looking for jobs, addiction rehab programs, and emergency shelters. By taking care of the immediate things such as food, clothes, and shelter, we are then able to assist in helping people get stabilized. In 2011 we gave out over 15,000 meals to those who visited our center and eat out of our kitchen. These included the youth, teenagers, youth adults, families, adults, and seniors. In 2012 we increased this amount serving over 4,000 meals per month and 2013 are numbers are yet increasing. It is the RTW Veteran Center's goal to provide free balanced health meals three times per day, seven days per week to veterans, their families, and all who are in need. If this is an effort you wish to support whether small or large, please click our donations page.

Saint James Food Pantry

The St. James Food Pantry is essential to the area because it is the largest food pantry in 60616 zip code and the only food pantry in zip code 60605. We do not restrict our services based on income or religious affiliation. Clients are served solely on whether or not they reside in 60616 or 60605 zip codes. High unemployment levels and the increasing scarcity of affordable housing produce a greater need for the services Saint James Food Pantry provides than ever before.

Shepherd's HOPE - Family Feeding Center

From the beginning Shepherd’s HOPE has focused on building relationships while providing much The Way Ministry Collaborationneeded material resources. The pantry of course has been the avenue through which those relationships have begun and then deeper connections have been made in the Bible studies. In 2014 The Way ministry partners began discussions about the need for a soup kitchen. They learned that there was none in Englewood! On April 23, 2014, The Family Feeding Center opened in the Peace Center at 6455 S Peoria. The Center allows great opportunity for conversation. After a meal the guests are invited to meet individually and explore other areas of need they may have – job search, housing, clothing, counseling. The Family Feeding Center welcomes everyone to join them on Wednesday or Friday between noon and 2:00 pm.

Shepherd's HOPE - Food Pantry

On March 3, 2009 a ministry was birthed that the Lord appropriately named Shepherd’s HOPE. Beginning with feeding a homeless man a homemade lunch followed by a series of events, the Lord prompted the founder Brian Anderson to open a food pantry in the dangerous and devastated Englewood community of Chicago. With 3 drug food pantryhouses on the block and constant violence on the street, the Lord used this little 1000 square foot food pantry to rock the lives of many individuals and turn their block and community upside down. Great change has occurred in our community since Shepherd’s Hope opened its doors. Violence has significantly decreased and the drug activity that was so prevalent is greatly diminished. A real sense of community is developing as we serve and show respect to all who enter the doors of Shepherd’s HOPE. From the very beginning, we gave ownership of the food pantry to the community. Nearly all of our volunteers are also clients who live near the pantry. In addition to providing food, we are working to mentor, train and raise HOPE for the residents of this community. Much of that goal is realized through the daily tasks at the pantry.

Sheridan-Carroll Food Pantry

Sheridan-Carroll Food Pantry has been feeding Chicagoans for over 25 years. An organization that started as a few guys getting together to deliver food baskets to some needy families around the holidays has grown over the years into a full blown food pantry, feeding over 200 families each month. As a purely volunteer organization, Sheridan Carroll takes every donation and applies it towards our goal – operating a food pantry. Our team donates thousands of hours each year to fundraising, gathering food, and passing the food along to the needy. The only payment they take is the satisfaction of knowing that they have helped other people.

St. Mary of the Lake Parish - Hagerty Center Food Pantry

The Hagerty Center, which was originally constructed to serve as a convent and presently houses the volunteers of Amate House, now functions most notably as the site for the St. Mary of the Lake Food Pantry, operated by the St. Mary of the Lake conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in partnership with our sharing parish, Immaculate Conception (on Talcott Avenue). Every two weeks pantry staff pick up a large amount of food for our pantry. That food is distributed to the needy in our parish on Wednesday and Friday Mornings. The conference also works with the Food Depository of Greater Chicago to supply food to feed the hungry of this neighborhood. Our dedicated team Andres and Juan make weekly trips to the depository.

Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry

Hunger may seem far away in a generally affluent community like Oak Park and River Forest. But even in the midst of affluence, people struggle with hunger. In Oak Park alone, it is estimated that over 6,000 individuals are “food insecure”—they do not know where their next meal is coming from. We’re not alone. 1 in 6 Americans struggles with Hunger. It is worse for families with children: 1 in 4 are food insecure. In its effort to provide hunger relief in 2013, Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry provided nutritious groceries, produce, meat and dairy products to 16,255 local families comprised of 43,937 individuals. We serve residents of 12 zip codes including portions of the city of Chicago (Austin, West Humboldt Park, Galewood) and most of the suburbs surrounding Oak Park. All clients must meet income guidelines and are limited to service once per month. Photo ID and proof of residency within our service boundaries are required for service. Each month, volunteers donate over 1700 hours of labor helping to feed their hungry neighbors. The value of that donated labor last fiscal year was over $175,000!

St. Cletus Food Pantry

The St. Cletus Food Pantry distributes non-perishable groceries from the vestibule of the Church on the second Thursday of the month from 6:30 – 8:00 PM. Each month we distribute a bag of groceries to 200-250+ families of the working poor, who live in our community. Some months we have special offerings for our clients, which in the past have included fresh produce, school supplies, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, bread, books, Easter baskets, and grocery store vouchers for perishable items. Our regular registered Food Pantry families benefit from the Giving Tree, our annual Advent parish outreach. Each family receives Christmas gifts and a special food basket. The Food Pantry shelves are stocked primarily by generous donations from St. Cletus parishioners. These include both food and monetary contributions. Donations of in-date groceries can be dropped off in the designated food bins located in Madonna della Strada shrine in the Church vestibule. You may bring them when you come to weekend Mass or daily, from 7:45 AM-4:00 PM. Suggested staple items include: dry pinto beans, rice, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit and vegetables, soup, meals in a can/box, canned meat, macaroni & cheese, tuna, and cereal. Favorite extras include crackers, boxed side dishes, coffee, tea, juice, powdered or evaporated milk, cooking oil, paper goods, condiments, toiletries and all sizes of diapers. St. Cletus Food Pantry receives donations from other groups, including the First United Methodist Church of Western Springs, the Highlands Presbyterian Church, the Boy & Girl Scouts, the annual Post Office Mother's Day collection, the Township of Lyons, and other local community and school organizations. St. Cletus Food Pantry is among the local food pantries, which receive a generous check from the proceeds of the annual La Grange/Western Springs CROP Walk against hunger, sponsored by Church World Service and the Empty Bowls Project, sponsored by the La Grange Business Association.

Chicago Chesed Fund - Food Programs

Our hunger relief program often means the difference between a family having enough to eat and a family doing without sufficient nutrition. We help hundreds of Jewish families throughout Chicago feed their children with dignity. Food pantry – over 1,000 individuals a month – and twice that number during the holidays - shop free of charge for the kosher food products they need most. Emergency food distribution – monthly food packages for those unable to shop at the pantry. Food vouchers – gift cards to major supermarkets so clients can purchase food without embarrassment or stigma. “Shearis Haplate” – We collect leftover food from special events and distribute it to those in need. Produce Distribution – Fresh fruits and vegetables are available at two community-based locations each week. Challah for Shabbos – Bakery challahs are distributed to families in need every Friday. We are a proud member-partner of the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Cook, Illinois

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
