Belle-Terrace Presbyterian Church - AGAPE Ministry

The mission of the Agape Ministry is to be a community outreach for our church, which is how it started. However, since our beginning, we have served clients as far south as Hephzibah, as far north as North Augusta, South Carolina and as far west as Columbia County. From our church members and friends of Belle-Terrace Church and a few of the local stores in our community and surrounding communities, we have received donations of food, store gift certificates, clothing, appliances, toys, school supplies and furniture. We are very grateful to you for helping us to keep this project going and we pray that you will continue with your donations of clothing, food, etc. We do appreciate you and offer a very hearty thank you for your support. On a regular basis, we send clothes to Haiti, we take clothes and bread to Freeman Personal Care Home, Daisy Vincent Personal Care Home and clothes and blankets to the homeless. We have also participated in the preparation of hot meals and delivered food to the homeless. However, our primary concern is to ensure that our local clients are properly supported from our pantry with food, clothing, toys, school supplies and furniture. One of our pet projects is the giving of Thanksgiving Baskets. We have given from 30 to 52 Thanksgiving baskets every year in addition to the number of clients we serve monthly. These baskets contain enough food for a family of four or more. The baskets are stuffed with a 10+ pound turkey, several cans of vegetables and fruit, dry beans, two starches (i.e. macaroni & Cheese, instant mashed potatoes, etc.), a desert, dressing mix, gravy mix and when it is available we also give fresh produce (vegetables and fruits). Distributes clothing and food every Tuesday to people in the community. Hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Christ Episcopal Church Outreach Ministries

Outreach ministries have been the central focus of Christ Church’s ministry since it was established in 1882. With its location in the Harrisburg neighborhood of Augusta, Christ Church is able to provide direct, on site outreach services to the poor and hungry of Augusta. The signature ministry of Christ Church is the Soup Kitchen, which operates every Saturday. This is an important day to hold the Soup Kitchen as many other social service agencies do not offer assistance on the weekend. Volunteers from around Augusta come to Christ Church every weekend to help feed the hungry. The Soup Kitchen is one of Augusta’s busiest, and served over 10,800 meals in 2011. Many of these meals are served to children and families. The Food Pantry is operated by Christ Church on a monthly basis. We offer food to families and individuals with a valid ID on the third Thursday of every month beginning at 11:00 a.m. A similar ministry is the Clothing Ministry which provides clothing to those unable to purchase it. Clothing and other donated items are distributed at the weekly Soup Kitchen and monthly Food Pantry. Christ Church has also entered into a partnership with physician assistant students at the Georgia Health Sciences University who run a medical screening clinic one Saturday per month at the Soup Kitchen. The students gain important skills in physical examination and interviewing techniques under the supervision of a faculty member while offering screenings for high blood pressure, diabetes, and other diseases.

DCCM Food Pantry

DCCM Food Pantry is a coalition of 15 multi-denominational area churches and private donors that have combined resources to run a centrally located food pantry. We are located on 430 8th St., in the heart of Augusta, and conveniently located near several housing complexes and on Route 3 of the Augusta Public Transit system. Since 1978, DCCM has established itself as a consistent, reliable source of food for those in need. DCCM distributes bags of nutritious food to individuals that meet income guidelines. We strive to supply a diverse array of items that our clients would be proud to feed their family. It is our hope that everyone has access to nutritious food regardless of their ability to pay. DCCM also offers “Snack Packs” to our homeless clients. Snack packs are ready-to-eat, prepackaged foods that do not require cooking equipment. These Snack packs enable our homeless clients to eat when the soup kitchens and shelters are not open. DCCM is categorized as a “super pantry,” distributing nearly 100 tons of food to clients every year. Because of our convenient location, regular hours, and consistency, DCCM has become a pillar in the community for those needing food. Over 1200 families each month rely on DCCM for sustenance. Most area pantries operate as an “Emergency Pantry,” limiting the amount of times an individual may receive food to a few times per year. Because the majority of our clients are on a fixed income and face chronic food insecurity, we allow individuals to receive food several times each month if needed. As a result, DCCM volunteers build a genuine rapport with our clients. We pride ourselves on developing relationships with the people we serve. DCCM works in partnership with Golden Harvest Food Bank to provide food for those in need. A bag of food contains an assortment of canned goods and frozen meat or vegetables. We also provide bread, milk, fresh produce, juice, and cereal when available. We are proud that our organization is operated nearly entirely by volunteers. We have over 30 volunteers that dedicate their time to load groceries, interview clients and pack bags. Without their hard work and generosity, DCCM would not be able to feed the hungry in our community.

GAP Ministries

GAP Ministries was founded in 1979 as a mission outreach of local Presbyterian and Disciples of Christ churches. Over the years the ministries provided by GAP have evolved as the needs of the community have changed, and we have continued to find ways to "fill the gap" between needs and services. Our base of support has also broadened, so that now we have thirteen churches and organizations from several denominations providing funding and/or volunteers. Food Pantry: GAP serves an average of 90 clients each week who are provided with canned goods, fresh breads and produce, frozen meat, and hygiene products each Thursday from 10:30AM-1PM. The stock comes from Golden Harvest Food Bank (link) and from donations from churches, individuals, Atlanta Bread Company and Fresh Market. As an act of hospitality clients may shop from the shelves for foods they enjoy.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Grovetown, Georgia

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
