Mosaic Christian Church - Manna Food Ministry (Community Outreach and Food Closet)

Our Community Outreach and Food Closet are ministries that were started a few years back with the heart of meeting the needs of our local families that are economically hurting. In Isaiah 58:7-8, we see that we are to share food with the hungry: "Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness[a] will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard." The Community Outreach does just that. The financial support we receive for this outreach allows us to purchase food, go out to local food banks we have contracted with, and distribute that food to our community. We provide a variety of food, including produce, meat, eggs, and bread. Currently, we are able to provide food on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 9:00am to 12:00pm. We pray every day that we would be able to do more for Christ. The Food Closet, which is open on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, is similar to the Community Outreach. However, the Food Closet is comprised only of dry and canned goods, which are stored in a refrigerated room at Mosaic. In 2012, Mosaic was able to give away over 190,000 lbs of food through these ministries. We hope to beat that record. Running these ministries requires many volunteers, significant time to coordinate, and great financial resources. If you are interested in learning more or volunteering, please click the button at the top of this page. Mosaic thanks you for all your prayer, help, and contributions toward the cause of Christ.

St. John Vianney Parish

On April 1, 1987, CCFL began operations and has served the community continuously ever since. In the first year, over 1,500 individuals per month received emergency food supplies. Staffed by dedicated volunteers and, with the help and donations from caring citizens and organizations in the local area, CCFL now provides food assistance to about 5,000 hungry people each month. As stocks permit, CCFL tries to provide each family with a 3-day emergency supply of food. All this would have been impossible without our many selfless volunteers and generous donors.

Our volunteers are committed to filling the bags weekly, with the proper nutritional food and supplies for each family. Individuals come in, are given the opportunity to meet with a pastor and receive a bag of groceries. We also provide baby formula and diapers.

Applicants may receive one basket of food per 30 days. Upon arrival applicants will meet with the pastor and complete paperwork before receiving food.

Elijah's Jar

Elijah’s Jar is the only permanent year-round food closet in the Foresthill area. We serve low income families, seniors, homeless, and disabled residents of the Foresthill Divide regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or religion. This includes the foothill communities of Iowa Hill, Michigan Bluff, Baker Ranch and Yankee Jim as well as Foresthill. We are an isolated community without any scheduled transportation system. Our clients without their own transportation would be in very serious need if we were not there to help. We are currently serving over 400 people per month representing about 150 families. This equates to about 7% of the populous of Foresthill area. 26% are children under the age of 18, over 14% are seniors and 24% are disabled. In recent years we have see the greatest increase in the clients of senior age group. We believe that Jesus Christ has called us to help provide for the needs of the disadvantaged. Since it's opening in March of 2003, our food closet has served over 700 families. Elijah's Jar is a much needed outreach ministry of the Foresthill Christian community. We receive regular donations from the following churches: Calvary Bible Church, Calvary Chapel Foresthill, Canyon View Assembly of God, Celebration Community Fellowship, the Foresthill Adventist, New Hope Lutheran, and Rivers of Life Four Square. However, these regularly committed donations cover less than 20% of our current monthly expenses. We receive no regular government funding and are fully dependant upon the generosity of many concerned people of the Foresthill area, as well as the service organizations, these churches, and occasional grants. Elijah's Jar is a 501(c)3 non-profit, therefore, all your donations are tax deductible. We are an all-volunteer organization.

The Salt Mine Food Closet

In the last few years our food closet had become our main charitable outreach to the community. At present we are providing food for nearly a thousand families a month. To meet these demands, each week we bring about four thousand pounds of food into The Salt Mine where it is sorted, bagged, boxed, and distributed to qualified families. Each food box provides a family with three meals a day for seven days. We are so grateful to our many volunteers who make all this possible. We could not do all that is required if it were not for their tireless help.

Sierra Reach Food and Clothing Ministry

The Sierra Reach Food and Clothing Ministry was birthed in the fall of 2001 out of the heart of Isaiah 61:1-4; with a desire to bring good news to the afflicted, bind up the brokenhearted, and bring comfort to those in need. Jesus was very clear as to the importance of serving those in need in the book of Matthew 25: 35-40, I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was naked and you clothed me,… to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to me. We believe that Christ died for ALL mankind and every individual has great value and meaning because of the price that Jesus paid for us. As we ourselves have been set free and comforted by Jesus it is our desire to be used of Him to do unto others as He has done unto us. We the “church” are the hands and feet that Jesus uses to love and serve those in our community who are afflicted, brokenhearted, and in need of comfort. We make no apologies that it is Jesus in us who does the work and provides for the needs that come our way. It is our desire to help reconcile and restore people to God and one another that they may have a hope and future. We are doing this through prayer, sharing the Word, and providing at least 3 meals per person per family per week. This is done through a hospitality approach as each individual is walked through our food section by one of our volunteers giving them multiple choices as to what foods they may choose from. We try to be aware of any special needs that our clients may have and do our best to meet those needs. After they have made all their choices, their groceries are carried to their car for them, giving us further opportunity to develop relationships with each individual. Our clothes and shoes are available for all sizes for the current season. Our volunteers check all donated clothes to be sure they are clean, stain free, and not torn. At times, we also have household items, blankets, and sleeping bags available. We believe that all who come deserve our best efforts when it comes the quality of our food and clothing that we have available. We are open every Thursday from 9:00a.m. – 12:00 noon. We begin each Thursday with a short devotional from the Bible followed by community prayer. Coffee and treats are always on hand for all to enjoy. We are available for Biblical counsel and prayer throughout the day as well. A sense of safety and community has developed as we have invested into people’s lives and trust has been built. We trust that God knows our needs better than we do and He will move hearts to give to this ministry so that no one who comes goes away feeling unloved, without food, or clothing.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Placer, California

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
