Immanuel Presbyterian Church

The Food Pantry is a core expression of Immanuel Presbyterian Church’s relationship and support of the larger community. We welcome our neighbors who experience hunger and food insecurity to join us on Saturday mornings, and our doors are always open for emergencies. Clothing is also given as donations are received.

Our Food Pantry has two food programs, and each guest self-selects which one they prefer:

Lunch Bag Program – Our Lunch Bag Program provides ready-to-eat items for those who may be homeless or do not have access to a place to cook.

Grocery Program – The Grocery Program offers more food, but much of it needs to be cooked (such as rice, pasta, or beans). We offer the food items to our guests for them to select what they would like. (In other pantries, pre-bagged groceries are handed out, which can lead to waste when people receive items they don’t eat). The program is a way of recognizing and extending dignity, acknowledging the humanity and recognizing preferences of each person.

When available, we offer gently used clothes or other items (examples: toys, books, clothing, shoes and more).

In efforts to be fair week to week in the distribution of food, we have opted to do a lottery. Thus, even though you may be the first in line, it does not mean you will be the first person called.

If we deem that behavior is disrespectful to our volunteers or the folks in line, we reserve the right to refuse service.

Every Sunday beginning at 1:30 PM, we give one free bag of groceries per household in need until our supply runs out. Our distribution station is located at our church entrance on Olympic Blvd.

What you will receive:

- One bag of groceries per household
- Each week the bag will differ and may include some of the following-

Saint Matthias Episcopal Church - Soup Hour

The St. Matthias Soup Hour started in 1984 as a response to seeing hungry people in the Uptown area of Whittier. But this program was not the first such effort by St. Matthias. There are newspaper articles from early in the 1900’s describing people from St. Matthias taking food to the railroad tracks to serve to the hobos coming through town on cross country trains. We take our heritage as a place that helps the least fortunate as a gift from God, a gift we hope to continue to faithfully fulfill in the future. Every weekday from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM we serve a hot meal to anyone who wishes to eat. Some guests are long time residents of the streets. Some are only recently homeless. Others live in nearby low income housing. There are also families, elders, and people who have jobs but do not make enough money to feed themselves the entire month. So at the end of the month we have more guests, but overall we average around 70 people served a day, through the work of about eight volunteers per day.

Our soup kitchen, known commonly on the street as “The Hippie Kitchen” is located in the central city ghetto of L.A.’s Skid Row. With over 10,000 homeless, poor and marginally employed residents, this area, with it’s numerous street encampments and rescue missions, has been dubiously nominated “the homeless capital of the nation.” It also is the most policed area in the nation, indeed second only to Baghdad’s Green Zone as the most policed area in the world.

Helping Other People Eat

H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Eat) was founded in 1992 and is an all-volunteer organization providing hot meals twice a week to the homeless of Santa Monica. Our support for HOPE is an outgrowth of our recovery-focused mission. A large percentage of the area's homeless suffer from alcoholism and/or drug addiction. We help with their immediate needs, in order to gain trust and to assist people in their recovery from active addiction over the long term. Friends of Choices has been providing administrative services for HOPE since early 2002. A number of the residents housed in our sober living homes have volunteered with HOPE, helping others the way they were helped. H.O.P.E. is a Santa Monica All Volunteer Meal Distribution Program. The Dream Center

Food Truck Program provides bags of groceries for children and families who are prone to homelessness. Many of the people we help tell us that the simple gift of a bag of groceries was just enough to get them through the month. Or they saved just enough on their grocery bill that they were able to pay their rent or keep the lights on. In this way, we not only address the issue of hunger, but also help keep fragile families from sliding into homelessness.

The Food Pantry at the St. Joseph Center provides low-income households with supplemental groceries and workshops designed to increase well-being and support progress toward self-sufficiency. Our Food Pantry provides nutritious foods including fruits and vegetables. What makes it unique is how it uses a Choice Model to allow clients to select their own food items—including proteins, specialty items, and fresh produce–in a supermarket-style setting as opposed to receiving pre-packaged bags of groceries.

The goal of the Food Pantry is to distribute enough food for low-income individuals and families to prepare healthy meals throughout the year and to enrich their lives with knowledge from workshops offered throughout the year that help improve their health.

If you need food assistance, please contact our Food Pantry to make an initial appointment.

Inland Valley Hope Partners

Inland Valley Hope Partners sponsors the year-round Pomona Valley Certified Farmers' Market to bring fresh, nutritious fruits and produce grown by local family farmers to residents of the Pomona Valley, specifically low-income families. The Market takes place every Saturday (rain or shine) at the corner of Pearl and Garey in Pomona from 7:30 - 11:30 A.M

Items Available for purchase include:

- fruits
- vegetables
- bread
- tamales
- flowers

Our Farmers’ Market is UNIQUE in that we are one of the few area farmers’ markets that accept federal nutrition assistance benefits (i.e., CalFresh, WIC, Senior WIC) as a form of payment and the only local market (within 15 miles) to offer the Market Match program.

The Market Match program, provided through partnership with Hunger Action LA, provides customers an extra $5 when they spend at least $10 of their federal nutrition assistance dollars to purchase healthy produce at the farmers’ market. By being able to use their WIC, EBT or other federal nutrition assistance in conjunction with the Market Match program at the Pomona Valley Certified Farmers’ Market, low income families and individuals are able to stretch their limited food budget to include more healthy, locally grown food items.

Cory’s Kitchen - El Sereno

Cory’s Kitchen provides emergency food to families in need. Families can obtain an allotment of food once a month, for a period of six months. We distribute grocery store items which include non-perishable packaged food, canned goods, baked goods, frozen meat, fresh produce, dairy and deli products, and may include toiletries, household cleaning products and baby care items. What we are able to give each week depends on what comes in to us. The size of the family is also taken into account. There is a brief intake process to enter the family into the Cory’s Kitchen database, which helps us determine the size of the family and any other needs they may have.

Cory’s Kitchen clients receive more than food. Counselors assess their needs and refer them to jobs and other services, such as: continued education, clothing services, legal services and counseling.

AIDS Services of Austin

For the past 30 years, AIDS Services of Austin has been responding to the AIDS epidemic in Central Texas. As we grew to become the largest AIDS Services Organization (ASO) in Central Texas, we pioneered new treatments, implemented cutting-edge prevention programs, influenced local decision-makers, and maintained a visionary and sustainable approach to the future. Through our work, we have been stewards of Austin’s resources, keeping people out of emergency rooms, providing housing, and increasing access to emergency resources.

The Helping Hands Food Bank grocery program provides nutritionally sound food choices to our clients. Food Bank staff, along with our registered dietitian, offers products such as seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs, whole grains and cereals, foods high in protein, dairy products, nuts, and dried fruits. The Helping Hands Food Bank’s model allows for client choice–each individual chooses the products they would like. Everything a client receives is an item they have selected.

Beyond food, this program offers personal and household hygiene items. Providing these costly products helps to offset the limited income of clients. The grocery program serves 450 individuals annually.

The Food Bank is a supplemental program–it is meant to complement other food sources. It is open every other week.

In 1982, residents at the Mercy Retirement & Care Center saw seniors in their neighborhood going hungry and launched the Brown Bag Program to distribute bags of groceries to hungry seniors in Oakland, CA. Today, 500+ volunteers make sure other seniors can remain self-sufficient and independent in their own homes.

The Mercy Brown Bag Program distributes groceries to seniors throughout Alameda County twice a month, free of charge. Depending on availability, each bag is brimming with nutritious items, such as fresh milk, tomatoes, green peppers, potatoes, carrots, oatmeal, plums, canned goods, low-sodium spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, tuna, eggs and more. Interfaith Food Center

The Interfaith Food Center is a non-faith-based, non-profit 501(c)(3) charity organization dedicated to meeting the needs of our hungry and homeless neighbors in Whittier, La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs. IFC was founded in 1983 when several local churches and synagogues recognized a developing need as the number of malnourished senior citizens in the Whittier and La Mirada area continued to grow. This was primarily due to the impact of rising inflation while living on fixed incomes and limited Social Security dollars. This group of compassionate individuals organized and started Interfaith Food Center as a community-based food distribution center, serving some 30 low-income local families. Today, Interfaith Food Center is one of the largest food pantries in California, serving more than 1,100 households on a weekly basis from a 6800 square foot warehouse/distribution facility equipped with commercial refrigerators and freezers and a walk in cooler unit to properly handle & store food donations. Annually, IFC places more than three million pounds of food in the hands of struggling families and individuals. Food is obtained from the Los Angeles Regional Food bank, local markets, churches, community organizations, and individual donors.

AIDS Food Store of Long Beach

In 1985, a group from Christ Chapel Long Beach came together to address the issue of hunger in a community where many social service agencies were unable or unwilling to help. In November 1985, AIDS Food Store Long Beach was born, with a commitment that no one in the Long Beach area living with HIV/AIDS disabilities would ever be without food, love and support. Our clients are men, women and children whose lives have been impacted by HIV/AIDS disabilities. Today, after two decades of distributing many tons of food to thousands of clients, AIDS Food Store remains true to its mission... “Until there is no longer a need, the ALL volunteer staff of AIDS Food Store will continue to address the issue of hunger in the HIV/AIDS community, be it physical, emotional or spiritual. Whether infected or affected, AIDS Food Store will never turn you away…” Our clients are referred to us through many social services and governmental agencies. We ask for confirmation of diagnosis from a doctor, and that clients subsist on an income of $1500.00 a month or less. AIDS Food Store relies on agencies, foundations, groups, churches, businesses and individuals to assist with ongoing donations of food, supplies and financial support. We receive no government funding and have no paid administration. On the second and fourth Saturday of the month, clients are given a standard bag of staples selected for balanced nutrition. They then have the opportunity to select from a variety of other foods, including fresh fruits, vegetables, pastries, breads, meat and dairy products. We approach this from a non-institutional perspective, at absolutely no cost to the client. Today, AIDS Food Store is the longest serving HIV/AIDS food provider in Southern California!

Christian Outreach In Action

COA is a nondenominational, nonprofit organization that has been serving the community for 27 years. We are not a church but we follow faith-based teachings that tell us to provide compassionate assistance to those in need. We are compelled by the need around us to feed the hungry, and shelter the homeless, provide spiritual support to the emotionally weak, heal the sick…and to ultimately teach them the skills necessary to reach and sustain self-sufficiency. COA seeks to improve the quality of life of the people we serve. However, “quality” is just a concept when you don’t have a roof over your head, a blanket to shield you from the cold, or food to feed your hungry children. More than two decades of service have taught us that these clients are best served by first stabilizing their daily existence including respite from cold and hunger, protection from exposure to the elements and the dangers of the street, and relief from despair. Many of these needs can be met through the combined services of COA and other local agencies. With assistance and support, struggling families and individuals are encouraged and motivated toward secure, independent and decent lives. COA provides a warm meal, twice a day, five days a week to anyone at our doorstep. In 2008 COA provided meals for 84,000.00 and 2009 increased to 98,000.00, with the demands increasing on a daily basis. COA provides groceries twice a week, eight times a month, every month, to many families. Clothing is available once a week and furniture provided upon availability. Hot Meal Schedule: BREAKFAST: Served every Monday-Friday 7:00-8:00 am; LUNCH: Served on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturday every month 11:00-12:00 am & the last 2 Sundays every month 11:30 am-12:30 pm; DINNER: Served every Monday- Friday 4:30-5:30 pm; The third Sunday at 3:00 three Mother Teresa nuns and Father Scott will serve a wonderful meal. Other Services: Every Tuesday and Thursday food bank 9:00-12:00 am; Every Friday clothing and furniture given out 9:00 am-2:00 pm.

St. James Community Food Locker

The mission of St. James Community Food Locker is to extend Christ’s love in a tangible way by providing approximately 60 bags of food to those in need every Friday, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The bags include canned and dry food, fresh produce and bread. Financial support and food items are contributed by parishioners, but food donations are also received from So. Pasadena Middle School, Calvary Presbyterian Church, and other community organizations and individuals. Day-old bread items are donated by Vons and Pavilions supermarkets. Fresh produce is obtained from the South Pasadena Farmers’ Market. Each Christmas season the Food Locker organizes a holiday “market.” We set out tables in the parish hall with an array of unwrapped gifts (new or like-new), from which people who come for food can choose presents for their families. Volunteers on a weekly or occasional basis are always welcome, to pick up produce from farmers’ market on Thursday evening, help assemble bags on Friday mornings or distribute them later in the afternoon.

Shepherd's Pantry

These are tough economic times and many families are just barely able to make ends meet. This includes many working families, often times referred to as the working poor. One of our main goals is to reduce homelessness by helping families remain in their homes by providing food/clothing so they can use their limited financial resources for rent, utilities, etc. We operate a 5,000 sq. ft. walk-in facility on Arrow Highway in Glendora where families can receive food, clothing and resource counseling assistance on Wednesday or Thursday evenings from 5-7 pm. They can also enroll their children in our reading tutor program on Monday afternoons at 4:00 pm.

Cory's Kitchen (Faith Center Ministries)

Cory’s Kitchen, Inc. was formed to meet the needs, both physically and spiritually, of hungry, hurting individuals, first within our fellowship of believers and secondly within our surrounding community. Our purpose is to share our food, our faith, our care, and our compassion with others while they are going through their current situation. We exist to help these wounded people identify the changes needed in their lives to correct their situation and by doing so, to build up the kingdom of God in our community. Cory's Kitchen is pleased to announce the opening of our newest distribution site in WALNUT. The new site is now serving the Walnut/Pomona area under the capable leadership of Viola Hervey. Viola's sweet spirit and bright smile are a welcome light in the community. All of the volunteers at Faith Center Ministries are very enthusiastic and excited about the ministry and they make it a joy to visit the site. Distribution Hours: Wednesdays 4 p.m - 6 p.m.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Los Angeles, California

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
