Unclaimed Money in Texas

The search form we opened on November 4, 2026 at ClaimItTexas.gov asks for a last or business name and a first name, not a Social Security number. You can add a city, a ZIP code or a property ID. That covers the search only. A claim can ask for more.

The Comptroller's FAQ says it does not charge for this service. Texas Property Code Sec. 74.509 does allow a handling fee to be taken from a claim payment of at least $100, so ask the Comptroller at 800-321-2274 if you see one.

Protect your Social Security number. Use the official site, and do not give your Social Security number to a third-party page or to anyone who calls, texts or emails you about unclaimed money.

How to Claim in Texas

  1. Search for your property at ClaimItTexas.gov.
  2. Create an online claim.
  3. Send supporting documents if they are required.
  4. The Comptroller reviews the claim. It may ask for more documents, approve the claim, or deny it if ownership is not proven.

Proof You May Need

  • Texas law says a claim must identify the specific property and include all documents the Comptroller requires (Property Code Sec. 74.501). The Comptroller tells you what is needed.

When Money Goes to the State

Texas Property Code Sec. 72.101 generally presumes personal property abandoned after longer than three years, when the holder doesn't know where the owner is and there has been no claim or act of ownership. Some property types have other periods.

Finder Fees

Texas Property Code Sec. 74.507 says a person who tells you about property may not contract for or receive more than 10% of the value recovered, plus reasonable attorney's fees needed to pursue the claim. That person may not file a claim form for you. An agreement is enforceable only if it describes the property and services, is signed by you or on your behalf, and states the expected value before and after the fee.

This is general information, not legal advice. See the sources below, and contact legal aid before you sign an agreement you are unsure about.
