4. What is counted as income for Section 8?
HUD defines income to include:
- The full amount, before any payroll deductions, of wages and salaries, overtime pay, commissions, fees, tips and bonuses, and other compensation for personal services;
- The net income from the operation of a business or profession.
- Under HUD's 2023 income and asset rule, IRS-recognized retirement accounts such as a 401(k) generally do not count as assets, but payments you receive from them may count as income. Ask your housing agency how it applies this rule.
5. How to get Section 8 immediately?
Due to limited funding from the federal government and a shortage of low-income housing units, there is no guaranteed way to receive Section 8 immediately. The application process can be long and time consuming.
6. How long does it take to get a Section 8 voucher after the interview?
