West Side UMC Food Pantry

The food pantry at West Side Methodist is open to the public Mon., & Thur. 9:30 to 12:30, and also on Wed. from 10 to 12 & 5 to 7. If you are in need of assistance, call our office at the church, 973-398-0846, or stop at the church to speak with someone. Dick Hodson oversees the operation of the Food Pantry. The food pantry cannot fund bills nor other financial needs. It can help by providing food. West Side does maintain a Thrift Shop in the small building adjacent to the church. The food distributed by the church includes a box of non-perishable food (banana box), usually a few baked items, and often small amounts of meat. In addition to the regular food distribution, major food distributions are made for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Work done in the food distribution, both the weekly food distribution and the major distributions, - obtaining the food and boxes, mailing, sorting and storing, everything else required for this ministry, - is performed by volunteers. The funding to do the work is supplied by the volunteers themselves. The Food Pantry has served the community since the early 1970's. It was started out of concern for the needs of many in the Hopatcong area. It has served the community continuously since then. If you want to serve the community by being a volunteer at the major food distributions, call the church at 973-398-0846.

Saint Joseph Food Pantry (Caring Group Food Pantry)

Saint Joseph Church is proud to sponsor our "Caring Group" Food Pantry located on the side entrance of our Parish Center at 22 Halsted Street, Newton (the white building immediately to the right of the church). In response to the Lord's mandate: "When I was hungry you gave me to eat" (Matthew 25:35) our parish community is proud to be the largest food pantry in Sussex County, providing food for 450-500 people each and every fourth Sunday of the month between 1:30-3:30pm (anyone with a Newton Township address is welcome to come). On each Monday from 11:00am-12:00Noon, food is also made available to those who were not able to come on Sunday (these people also need to be Newton residents). Mondays our volunteers allow individuals to come and choose the food they would like from our pantry food shelves. Our parish has changed the way in which we collect food. Ever since the assisgnment of Father ST, he has asked families to bring canned and boxed food each and every week to church. A monestary collection is taken up in church for the Food Pantry once a month and the designated wooden collection boxes clearly marked "Caring Group" accept donations at any time. If you would like to be part of this very rewarding ministry by either bringing food to the pantry or assisting the many volunteers who distribute, pack and organize the food donations, please contact Mrs. Sarah Samanns at: 973.919.7666 in the evenings.

Open Cupboard Food Pantry Inc.

Open Cupboard Food Pantry is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) agency serving northern Hunterdon County. We believe we have a responsibility to fill the very basic need for food for those in need. Open Cupboard Food Pantry began as High Bridge Food Pantry in November 1993 when Anne Underhill decided to help a family in need in her church. From its simple beginnings in an actual closet at High Bridge United Methodist Church, the Pantry grew to meet the need in northern Hunterdon County, changing its name to Open Cupboard Food Pantry in 1997 to reflect its growing scope. In 2002 the Pantry moved to a retail space in High Bridge and opened a thrift shop to defray the cost of the increased rent and utilities, with any extra income dedicated to buying groceries. Recognizing the need for more space and a more visible location, the Pantry moved to its current Clinton location in 2009. Today Open Cupboard Food Pantry encompasses over 5,000 square feet of space including offices, food storage, intake areas and a client area, as well as a bright, spacious shop with 2 handicapped-accessible dressing rooms. Over 100 volunteers work in the Pantry and thrift shop. We depend entirely on donations of groceries, personal care and cleaning items for the Pantry. Monetary donations allow us to buy perishables such as meat, produce and dairy products in addition to basic groceries as needed. The shop accepts contributions of clean, gently-used or new clothing, books and household items. All proceeds from thrift shop sales are used to defray the Pantry's operating expenses and purchase groceries as needed. Freezers and refrigerators allow us to accept donations of perishable foods. The Pantry distributes USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) commodities.

Blessed Hope Soup Kitchen

We are the first hot-meal program in Warren County, New Jersey. Since 1986, our trained volunteers continue to serve hot meals to the underprivileged men, women and children in our surrounding communities. The volunteers come from our congregation as well as our community. Our mission is simple - to find a need and fill it. Although we have built this outreach on a foundation of hot meals, we continue to augment our services. Once a month, we provide our grounds to the volunteers of Mother's Cupboard who truck in, set up and give away clothing and household items. We prepare special Sunday dinners during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. At Christmas, with the help of generous donors, we provide toys, gifts and food to needy families. In the past, as equipment and talent arrived, we were able to offer computer training and remedial reading. Through the Warren County Health Bureau, NORWESCAP and our own Safely-Serve Certification program, we provide a safe, clean environment to the public. We thank all our donors - large and small, frequent and occasional, anonymous and named - for their generous contributions of money, food, equipment, supplies and talent to this much-needed effort. They have made a huge difference in people's lives.

Fellowship Food Outreach

Serving the community in need since 2003. 501-3c non-profit organization. While our primary goal is to supply people in crisis with food, our purpose is to offer lasting hope and friendship. Food insecurity robs people of far more than sustenance. We seek to rebuild confidence through practical support. Our partnerships with Rutgers Snap-Ed, Norwescap, and Fellowship Church open the door for additional resources: classes on nutrition, exercise, and finance, access to whole foods through the farmers market state program, job and career development opportunities, information on discounted services, and spiritual support. The Fellowship Food Outreach serves NJ and Pa. Pantry Hours: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on the second Friday & third Saturday of every month. Join us for refreshments at 10:30 AM.

Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Hackettstown, New Jersey

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
