Beth-El Temple Church of Christ Soup Kitchen

In verse 35 of the Gospel according to Matthew, it states, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. . .” The burden to feed the hungry fell on Missionary Roslyn Wright. On Wednesday, February 25, 2009, the Beth-El Temple Soup Kitchen became a reality. On this day, three people would enter through the doors to be fed with a staff of fifteen willing and ready to serve. On this day, more than just food was provided. . . clothes from the Clothing Closet were distributed, prayer and an encouraging words were imparted, information was provided for employment, medical and housing referrals and assistance as well as counselors for drug addiction. Considering most meals are prepared by the hands of our qualified and anointed staff , the soup kitchen have had several sponsors to assist with providing meals through actual meals or monetary donations. Such sponsors include Nehemiah House, Maryland Food Bank, St. Vincent DePaul, CanCan, Woodmere Neighborhood Association, McDonalds, Mother Corrine Pender (MCP) Helping Hands Ministry of Beth-El Temple Church of Christ, Mr. Bogus & Sister Felicia Lockett. On average, the soup kitchen will feed approximately fifty-five people per week. Since the soup kitchen has been in existence, they have fed over 2,500 people and counting

Perry Hall United Methodist Church Food Pantry

Perry Hall UMC has operated an emergency Food Pantry since 1982. We will provide meals for 3 days, 3 meals each day, the amount of food determined by the number in the family. Our shelves are kept furnished with non-perishable, nutritious foods through the warm generosity of the members of PHUMC, and through the government program of sharing surplus foods. A typical grocery order will include spaghetti and spaghetti sauce, macaroni and cheese, soups, pork and beans, several vegetables, several fruits, stew or canned chicken, tuna fish, canned salmon, peanut butter, dry cereal, and perhaps pancake mix and syrup. We always give toilet paper, since that commodity is not covered by food stamps. The food pantry is on the ground floor next to the back door of the church. Please call 410-256-1897 for further information.

Assistance Center of Towson Churches

The ASSISTANCE CENTER OF TOWSON CHURCHES offers an ecumenical program that provides help to the poor and needy families in our community. It began as the result of a study conducted by the Towson Area Ministerial Association exploring an effective and efficient way to meet the needs of people coming to churches requesting help. Fourteen churches joined together to form ACTC. A consortium of 48 churches now participates in the outreach effort. The Assistance Center opened in 1985 to give emergency assistance, including food, eviction and utility cutoff prevention, payment for prescriptions and lunches for the homeless. Today a GBMC nurse practitioner helps with medical matters. Its service area incorporates 21 zip codes in central Baltimore County extending up to the Pennsylvania line. The center operates with a director, an assistant and a team of 60 trained volunteers, who interview each applicant to determine their specific needs, stock the food pantry and assist with special projects. Located at 120 W. Pennsylvania Avenue (between Baltimore and Washington Avenues on the alley behind Calvary Baptist Church) in Towson, the center is open Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 2:45 PM.

CAN Food Pantry

Community Assistance Network, Inc (CAN) provides emergency food to income eligible Baltimore County residents. The Emergency Food Package is meant only as a supplement and provides enough food for approximately 5 to 7 days. CAN attempts to provide food from the major food groups so that each package is nutritionally balanced. However, the contents of each package is dependent upon donations that we receive. Therefore, the contents of packages will vary from day to day. Eligibility for emergency food packages is determined through the following documents: 1) some form of photo identification with current address 2) proof of household income 3) Social Security card(s). Eligible recipients may receive emergency food only once every 30 calendar days. Volunteers from the Baltimore Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association help fill our Holiday Food boxes. CAN serves approximately 1,000 emergency food packages each month. In December of each year, we serve an additional 1,500 Holiday Food boxes.

Donald Bentley Food Pantry

The Donald Bentley Food Pantry was established in 1990 in Baltimore, Maryland through a student-led initiative to honor Bentley, a Gilman student who was murdered in summer 1989. The food pantry still operates to this day and issues food to the needy on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm (at 2405 Loch Raven Blvd, Baltimore, MD 21218), under the leadership of the Bentley family and volunteers. While the pantry receives donations from the USDA Surplus program, the Maryland Food Bank and other local groups, the organization is always in need of extra help. Non-perishable items are preferred, but any contributions (i.e. toiletries, gently-used clothing, etc.) are greatly appreciated. Donation recipients must be a residents from either the 21202 or 21218 zip codes, and an ID and referral are required in order to receive food.

Franciscan Center - Food Services

Dining Program: Roughly 400 to 600 people come into the Franciscan Center daily to partake in the Hot Lunch Program and enjoy a hot, healthy meal prepared on-site using fresh ingredients. In the past fiscal year, the Center served 102,395 meals. In partnership with the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, the Center has adopted a healthy food initiative and regularly provides highly nutritious meals that contain fresh fruits and vegetables as well as high quality proteins. The Franciscan Center is also the first “soup kitchen” in the country to participate in the national Meatless Monday initiative. Every Monday, the Center serves a delicious vegetarian meal such as lentil shepherd’s pie, vegetable lasagna, or three-bean meatless chili. We now offer our “Supper Club,” an evening meal each Wednesday. Gleaning Projects: Working in partnership with Johns Hopkins, United Way, and Gather Baltimore, the Franciscan Center has gleaned thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables and fruits to serve to our neighbors in need. This program has expanded to include donations from area farmer’s markets, supermarkets and restaurants. Gleaning has made it possible for the Center to cut our cost per meal served nearly in half, while at the same time increasing exponentially the quality and nutritional value of the food we provide to poor and hungry citizens of Baltimore. Every Tuesday night, volunteers chop vegetables for the week ahead. Pantry Program: The healthy food initiative has also extended to the Center’s Emergency Pantry. We offer clients the option of receiving a regular bag of groceries or a healthy bag, which is stocked with low fat, low sodium items such as brown rice, ground turkey, fresh and frozen vegetables rather than canned. We’re pleased to report that more than 40% of our clients are now choosing this healthy bag. The Franciscan Center is tracking the progress of each participant through weekly surveys. Participants also receive educational materials, access to guest speakers, and had a trip to One Straw Farm to see where their produce is grown. The project would not be possible without funding from the United Way of Central Maryland, and our other partners including, University of Maryland Extension Food Supplement Nutrition Education Program (FSNE), the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, Molly Shattuck Vibrant Living, Coldwell Banker, and One Straw Farm.

GEDCO North East Food Pantry

GEDCO's North East Food Pantry serves individuals in crisis by connecting customers with emergency food relief that will enable movement towards self-sufficiency. The heart and compassion of this entirely volunteer-run program drives them to ensure that everyone leaves with food. In 1982, when an Ad Hoc committee realized the great need within their community for additional emergency food resources for families and individuals with low incomes, they opened the North East Food Pantry. The North East Food Pantry is open five days a week, Monday-Friday from 10:30am-1:30pm. Not only are there hours widespread, but they are unique to the Hamilton, Arcadia and Harbel neighborhoods (212 zipcodes) in northeast Baltimore City. NE Food Pantry belongs to the MD Food Banks' Network Partners Area Councils (NPAC), which connects food banks so that they may share challenges and solutions with one another.

Lutheran Mission Society - Immanuel Compassion Center

The mission field is not all overseas. It is also right here, in our own neighborhoods, where people are struggling and hurting and hungering for the wholeness Jesus brings. This is the call the Lutheran Mission Society heard over 100 years ago, and the call that still drives LMS ministries today — ministering to the needs of the body with food, clothing and shelter; ministering to the needs of the soul with the Good News of Jesus. LMS Compassion Centers exist for this purpose. There are currently nine Compassion Centers in Maryland and York, PA where over 500 people come daily for help with the physical necessities of life and for the nourishment of spirit that only Jesus can give. Since the inception of the agency we have embraced the holistic approach for providing services. Tending to the clients physical, emotional, and/or spiritual needs is part of this approach. Some are struggling with the poverty that they are living in and many have additional struggles dealing with mental illness, homelessness, drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, abuse, as well as other stressors. The Drop-In-Center provides services beginning with the morning meal from 8.00 to 10:15 am daily and continues from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m (Monday through Friday). We serve an average of 176 men, women and children everyday. The meal we serve may be eggs, potatoes, oatmeal, fruit and coffee, or it may be chicken cordon blue with all the trimmings. The menu is largely dependant on the donations that we receive. During the Drop-In-Center hours, many services are provides. Among other services, clients are given access to a phone to make important phone calls, given the chance to fill out a clothing form to request a bag of clothes (clothes which have been donated to Manna House and sorted by volunteers), given the chance to take a nice warm shower with toiletries provided, provided with food vouchers to a local food pantry, assisted with applying for birth certificates/ID's, assistance with completing paperwork, given bus tokens for documented appointments, and access to case management. Many clients just need someone who will listen to them, without being judgmental . . . that can be the biggest service of them all!

Today, many types of emergency assistance are available, including: food; eviction prevention; medical help; utility cut-off prevention …and more are planned for the future. Drive-thru Food Pantries

Since the start of the coronavirus, drive-thru food pantries have become the safest, most efficient way to provide food to our struggling neighbors.

Who can visit a drive-thru pantry?

Drive-thru pantries are open for anyone who needs help getting food. There are no eligibility criteria. Visitors do not need to provide any identification or income statements.

Only two piece of information is asked

  • You Zipcode, and
  • Number of people in their family.

You dont need to take appointment. Drive-thru pantries are first-come, first served so plan to arrive early.

How do drive-thru pantries actually work?

There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, heres how most work:

Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.

Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.

Checkin.

You are required to fill some information for Pantry's recording keeping.

Food is loaded into the cars.

Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Pet Food Pantry

One in four pet owners who give up their pets to a shelter say it is because they cannot afford to care for them. Pet Food Pantries are designed to fill the void in the nations current assistance programs that exclude the purchase of food and supplies for family pets.

The Pet Food Pantry provides free pet food, for 3 months or less, to pet owners who cannot afford to feed their pets in Baltimore, Maryland

Who are eligible for Pet Food Pantry

Pet Food Pantry helps people who are:

  • All ages, races and marital status
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Retired, living on social security or other limited income
  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • Experiencing homelessness or housing instability

Tips for Visiting a Food Pantry

Show up early.

This is very important. This means you will be first in line and have a chance to get the items that are sought after and in limited quantities such as fresh produce, dairy and frozen food.

You don't usually need to show up hours ahead of time but coming at least an hour before is usually a good idea.

Remember all documentation.

Many food pantries require documentation to prove who you are, and in some cases, where you live.

This is to make sure people are not coming more than they are allowed or using fake names to do so. Call ahead of time to find out what documentation is needed.

It's just your photo ID and a piece of mail that verifies your address.

Use several food banks.

Using more than one food bank (when available) is smart because you may be able to get something at one that you may not get at another.

For instance, one may have a deal with a local gardener that gives them their extras. This may mean this food bank has more produce.

Eligible for other programs?

Ask your Department of Social Services office if you are eligible for other assistance programs to supplement your household’s food supply.

They can easily tell you if you can apply for WIC (Women and Infant Children), USDA Commodities or SNAP(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Ask about extras.

If you have special needs for infants or special diets, the pantries may be able to assist you.

Many times, they can help with diapers, baby formula, baby food, personal hygiene products, and even special diet items like gluten free or sugar free foods.

Go on different days of the week.

Depending on the food pantry, they may be open only one or two days a week or they may be open all seven days. When you have a choice, going midweek is often best as it is less crowded.

Be polite to workers.

Nearly everyone at a food bank is a volunteer. Be polite to the workers there as they often deal with highly emotional situations.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is the difference between a food bank and a food pantry?

Independent community food pantries are self-governing and usually distribute food to their clients on a once-a-month basis. A food bank is the storehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly.

2. What kind of food is at a food pantry?

Specifically, food banks often need items like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Canned beans
  • Canned stew
  • Canned fish

3. Who can go to food pantry?

At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food.

4. What is the difference between a food pantry and a soup kitchen?

A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them.

5. How does a food pantry work?

Food Banks acquire large donations of edible but unmarketable food from the food industry and distribute it to organizations that feed hungry people. Then they provide this food to family in a need.
